PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY

1. Find the perimeter of each square. (6 marks)

a) side length 8 cm Perimeter = 8 cm + 8 cm + 8 cm + 8 cm = 32 cm

b) side length 10 m 10 m + 10 m + 10 m + 10 m = 40 m

c) area 49 m2 Side length is 7 m, because 7 x 7 = 49.

So, Perimeter = 7 + 7 + 7 + 7 = 28 m

d) area 196 cm2 Side length is 14 cm, because 14 x 14 = 196.

So, Perimeter = 14 + 14 + 14 + 14 = 56 cm

6. Which of the following triangles are right triangles? Explain.
(4 marks)
a)

169
25
25+144 = 169
144 Then it is right angle triangle

b) 36+64 = 100 ≠ 81
36
Then it is not right angle triangle
64
81

7. Determine whether the triangle with each set of side lengths is a right
triangle. Justify your answer. (4 marks)

a) 15, 20, 25
(15 x 15) + (20 x 20) = 225 + 400 = 625
25 x 25 = 625
Then it is right angle triangle.

b) 10, 24, 26
(10 x 10) + (24 x 24) = 100 + 576= 676
26 x 26 = 676
Then it is right angle triangle.

c) 11, 22, 30
(11 x 11) + (22 x 22) = 121 + 484= 605
30 x 30 = 900
Then it is not right angle triangle.

d) 6, 8,12
(6 x 6) + (8 x 8) = 36 + 64= 100
12 x 12 = 144
Then it is not right angle triangle.

8. An 10m ladder leans against a wall. How far up the wall does the ladder
reach if the foot of the ladder is 4 m from the base of the wall? Show
your work. (4 marks)

( 10 x 10 ) - ( 4 x 4 ) = 100 -16 = 84
√ 84=9.2 m

10 m

4m

9. A weather balloon is anchored by a cable 600 m long.

Page total: .../4

The balloon is flying directly above a point that is 80 m from the anchor.
How high is the balloon flying? Give your answer to the nearest meter.
(4 marks)

( 600 x 600 ) - ( 80 x 80 ) = 360000 -6400 = 353600

√ 353600=594.64 m
600 m

80 m
The balloon is flying at a height of 595 m,
to the nearest meter.

10.A rectangular field is 50 m long and 35 m wide. Adam walks from one
corner of the field to the opposite corner, along the edge of the field.
Sarah walks across the field diagonally to arrive at the same corner.
How much shorter is Sarah’s shortcut? (6 marks)

The diagonal of the field measures 61m.

(50x50) + (35x35) = 2500 + 1225 = 3725
Sarah walks 61m.
Adam walks 50 + 35 = 85 m
Sarah’s shortcut is 85 – 61 = 24m shorter

your answer to 1 decimal place. (6 marks)

The side length of the square is the square root of √ 144=12 cm.
The diagonal of the square is the hypotenuse of the right triangle with sides
12 and 12.
The length of the diagonal of the square is 17.0 cm, to 1 decimal place.

b) 36 ÷ (4 - 8 × 2 ) -18
36 ÷ (4 - 16 )
36 ÷ (- 12 )
36 ÷ (- 12 ) = -3

c) ( 36 ÷ 4 - 8 ) × 2 -7
