Subject: English For Communication 4 Topic: Substance and

Matter

Unit: 2.1 Grade: 8 Time: 2 hours

Strand: 1 Explore matter and the environment

Standard: F1.2

Observe and explain the states of matter and the effects of heat energy on

substances.

Indicators/ Learning Outcomes:

1) Explain the effect of heat on matter.

2) Classification of matter.

Key Concept: Matter, states of matter, energy, effects, heat, solid, liquid

and gas

Objectives:

Knowledge (K):
1. Students will be able to know the different states of matter.

2. Students should be able to classify matter.

Process (P):

1. Students will be able to acknowledge the different process in matter

conversion.

2. Students should be able to comprehend the various effects of heat on

matter

Attribute (Affective):

1. Students should reflect on how mater interacts with the environment

2. Students should be able to predict what will happen when matter

interacts with heat.

Learning Activities:

Warm up:

1. Different substances will be displayed in front of the students for

them to choose which one is liquid, solid or gas.


Presentation:

1. After warm up activities, a slide showing different states of matter will be

displayed on the projector screen.

2. The students will be asked to read of their books and the teacher will

explain as they read along.

3. The students will the look at the vocabularies on their text book and the

teacher will explain each with appropriate examples.

Practice:

1. The students in their groups they will match different vocabularies to the

correct state.

2. They will try to explain the different arrangement of molecules in each

state.

3. They will also do the featured exercises in their text books

Production:
1. In pairs / groups, the students will try out the effects of heat on different

substances and try to explain why.

Wrap Up: The teacher will again go over the vocabulary. Then the teacher

will collect all the works done by the students and assign their homework.

Comments and Reflections:

Problems: This unit was not quite challenging as most of the lesson

had to do with visual aids and the students could comprehend.

Solution: A comprehensive way to make it better is to let them carry

out heat changes in the classroom and fish out the similarities and

differences.
