Lesson Plan

Subject/Grade Level: Science 8Th grade

Lesson Title:

Predicting Properties and Interactions of Elements.

Lesson Duration 2 hours

Upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to predict

properties and interactions of elements using a periodic table.
Performance Objective:

Preparation
Framework Strand: Physical Science

2b. Predict the properties and interactions of

given elements using the periodic table of the elements. (DOK 2) Metals and nonmetals Acids
and bases Chemical changes in matter (e.g., rusting [slow oxidation], combustion [fast
oxidation], food spoilage).
Content Standard Competencies/Objectives:

MS CCR/CCSS:W.8.1 Write

arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant

evidence.
W.8.2f-Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from and supports the information
or explanation presented.
W.8.6 use technology, including the Internet, to produce and publish writing and present the
relationships between information and ideas efficiently as well as to interact and collaborate with
others.
ISTE: 2a Students will use digital media and environments to communicate and work
collaboratively, including at a distance to support individual learning and contribute to the
learning of others.

Instructional Aids:

Materials Needed:

Periodic table, metal, nonmetal, textbooks, paper, and pencils.

Equipment Needed:

Teacher will need a computer connected to a Smart board or projector to allow students to view
Internet search results examples found by the teacher. Each student will need a computer with
Internet access will write the website on the board so the students can see it, so they can go to

that site.
Desired Student Prerequisites:

Student will need to know all the elements on the periodic

table including metals, nonmetals,.

Introduction/Anticipatory Set

Students will differentiate between metals and nonmetals using the periodic table, and search the
above websites.

Lesson Outline/Procedures:

1. Bell ringer: Students will learn the difference between metals and
nonmetals using the periodic table.

2. Teacher will ask students questions about the periodic table.

Instructor Notes:

Teacher will share

Google Doc link with
each student to
complete this activity.
Teacher will access
the smart board for the
student to have a view
of the period table and
website and be able to
view the students
work.
The teacher will play
a Kahoot game and
quiz the students. The
teacher will make up
questions to generate
the quiz.

3. Students will be assigned in small groups of twos.

4. Students will receive all the necessary tools to complete this

assignment. Pencil, Paper, Periodic Table handout, Textbook, Metal and
Nonmetal.
Students will answer questions about the periodic table, such as; how
many metals are there?, how many nonmetals, how many gases , and
noble gases? What are the group number on each metal and nonmetal?
Application
Guided Practice:

The teacher will guide the students throughout the knowing the difference between metals,
nonmetals, and gases.

Independent Practice:

The students will work individually discovering the metals, nonmetals, and the gases on the
periodic table.
Summary

The teacher will end this activity with a quiz, each group answering the
questions how many metals are there?, how many nonmetals, how many gases , and noble
gases? What are the group number on each metal and nonmetal? Explaining and demonstrating
and predicting the properties and interactions of given elements using the periodic table of the
elements.
Lesson Closure:

Evaluation

The teacher will observe the student work and ask oral
questions such as how many nonmetals, how many gases, and noble gases? What are the group
number on each metal and nonmetal?
Formal Assessment: Oral quiz, the teacher will grade according to how many answers the
student get corrects.
Informal Assessment/Review:

Lesson Extension
Extension/Enrichment: The

students will research the periodic table on the computer for

answers.
Accommodations/Differentiation: Students

will be allowed to used textbooks, notes, and

other resources.
Visual learners; will see the periodic table on smart board
Auditory learners; will be shown a video of the periodic table.
Kinesthetic learners; will have a periodic table to manipulate with their hands.
