d As a Grade one evaluator, for an oral reading test, I observed that there
was progress of the identified struggling readers in terms of their reading ability. I
asked the learner to read a passage that was appropriate for their age and reading
level. The learner was able to read the words confidently, but there were some
errors in pronunciation which indicated phonemic awareness difficulties. There
was also a pause in between sentences which showed that the learners had
difficulty with sentence comprehension. The learners also substituted similar
sounding words and said words that were not in the actual passage. As the test
progressed, I noticed that the learners was reading slower than usual, which
indicated that the passage may have been a bit difficult for them. Some learners
also struggled with multi-syllabic words. Apart from these difficulties, the learner’s
reading was fairly good. I explained to the learner the areas of weakness in their
reading and how they can address these concerns. I also suggested that the
learner read aloud more to improve their oral reading fluency. In conclusion, the
oral reading test was a useful tool in assessing the learner's reading ability. The
test provided insight into the learner's reading strength and weaknesses, which
will be useful in providing personalized instruction to improve their ability to read.
I also informed the teacher adviser of the result of the ORV and gave technical
assistance on how to help some of the identified learners to develop the love in
reading.
