KULLU PAINTING
The art of painting in Kullu style are an
exquisite expression of its iconic beauty .They
share many common features with Basholi
arts as the similarities are stretched to the
extent, the same printers from Basholi were
sent to Kullu to depict life of Lord Rama, the
family deity of Pahari Rulers on canvas. The
painters have prepared an album of Rama
which is famous as ‘Shangari Ramayana’.
Various sections of Ramayana have been
portrayed like Bal Kanda, Ayodhya Kanda,
Uttara Kanda etc. Latter is a rich collection of
270 paintings having anecdotes marked
beneath them. These are in possession of
RAJA RAGHBIR SINGH of Shangari in
Kullu Valley. The paintings under the royal
patronage are a precious heritage and a
showcase of elegance and aesthetics of the
ruling classes who were both sensitive to art
and religion

Himachal Pradesh’s Paintings

Himachal Pradesh possesses a rich cultural


heritage. The glimpse of rich painting heritage
of Himachal Pradesh is joined in the museums
and art galleries for tourist, almost every
house in the villages, the miniature paintings
are showcased in different forms. In those
times when the painting culture was in
flourish, the painters focused on the lives
Princes, war, hunting etc. They also portrayed
love themes like the Radha and the Krishna.
Like any other state in India, Himachal
Pradesh too is unique in its cultural aspects.

KERALA PAINTINGS

The ancient paintings of Kerala had its origin


in cave paintings and carvings.
‘Kalamezhuthu’, a ritual art in which the
pictures of Gods and Goddesses are drawn in
the floor using coloured powder is another
system of painting prevalent in Kerala. There
are number of modern artist including ‘C.
Raja Ravi Varma’, ‘K. Madava Menon’
etc. Kerala’s mural paintings are the frescos
depicting Hindu Mythology and Legends,
which are drawn on the walls of temples and
churches in Kerala. The ancient wall paintings
are mainly seen in places of worship.
