CODE OF CONDUCT FOR ENGINEERING
LABORATORIES

This document is intended to ensure the safe operation of the laboratories in the School of
Engineering.  Safety in the laboratories is our primary concern. The following rules must be
obeyed at all times. Staff will be enforcing these rules without exception. Failure to observe
these rules may result in your removal from the laboratory.

Students are expected to conduct experiments in a safe manner respecting the physical well-
being of their fellow students and themselves.  

Students should read and understand all contents of this document and are required to sign
the Laboratory Usage Agreement located at the end of this document. 

GENERAL LABORATORY RULES:


 BE PREPARED.  
Read and fully comprehend the requirements before you start.  If you do not understand, see
your module leader or technical staff in charge.
 THINK SAFETY.  
Work deliberately and carefully.  No horseplay in the labs.
 OBEY LOCAL LAB RULES AND INSTRUCTIONS FROM STAFF .
Follow local lab rules (if available) and any verbal instructions from staff. They are there to
keep you safe.
 NEVER WORK ALONE.
Lone working is not permitted in any Yellow, Amber or Red labs.
 KNOW THE HAZARDS OF ANY MATERIALS OR MACHINERY YOU ARE
WORKING WITH. 
Read all available safety information about the machine, materials and/or activities prior to
starting.
 WEAR APPROPRIATE SAFETY EQUIPMENT. 
Safety equipment (goggles, gloves, ear plug etc) must be worn when required by the
laboratory rules or activity being performed. 
 ALL STUDENTS MUST WEAR APPROPRIATE LABORATORY ATTIRE . 
No open toed shoes; no loose-fitting clothing; long hair should be tied back; dangly jewellery
should be removed.
 NO EATING AND DRINKING IN THE LABORATORY.
 KNOW EMERGENCY PROCEDURES.  
Make note of fire escape routes and emergency phone locations.
 REPORT ANY PERCEIVED SAFETY HAZARDS. 
Immediately report any spills, equipment malfunctions, injuries or other perceived safety
hazards to staff.
 KEEP YOUR WORK AREA CLEAN. CLEAN UP AFTER YOU FINISH.
A clean work area is a safe work area.
 IF IN DOUBT, STOP AND ASK.
Do not proceed until you are certain that you are able to conduct the work in a safe manner.
