Benthic Invertebrates as Water Quality Indicators

This research plan proposes to study the biodiversity of benthic macroinvertebrates in Badiangon Spring in Gingoog City, Philippines. The study aims to identify the benthic invertebrate species present, determine the biodiversity value, and examine how water quality relates to biodiversity. Samples will be collected from three sites using kick net sampling and preserved. Specimens will be identified using keys and microscopy. Biodiversity indices like density and Shannon-Wiener index will be calculated. Biotic and Beck biotic indices will assess water quality based on invertebrate communities. Water samples will undergo chemical and microbiological analyses. References are provided.

RESEARCH PLAN

`
I-PROPOSED TITLE: BIODIVERSITY OF BENTHIC MACROINVERTEBRATES AS BIOINDICATOR OF WATER
QUALITY IN BADIANGON SPRING, GINGOOG CITY

II-QUESTIONS TO BE ADDRESSED:
1. What are the benthic invertebrates thriving in Badiangon spring, Gingoog City ?
2. What is the biodiversity value of benthic invertebrates ?
3. How is the water quality of the spring related to the biodiversity of its benthic invertebrates ?
4. What are the chemical and microbiological analyses of the spring water?

III-MATERIALS AND METHODS:

Selection of Sampling Sites-( Single Habitat Approach ) Source : 7 Benthic Macroinvertebrate Protocols,
http: // [Link]/owow/monitoring/rbp/[Link].
Three sampling spots within the riffles and run areas of the stream will be selected. Sampling spots will be marked and
mapped using GPS gadget.
Collection of Specimens – Kick Net Sampling (Zimmerman, 1998 )
The Kick net sampling method will be used in collecting the [Link] contents of the net will be rinsed into the sieve
bucket. Any organism found will be placed into the sample container and preserved in 95 % ethyl alcohol.
Laboratory Analysis
The samples from the sample container will be carefully transferred to the pan. The specimens will be sorted, counted and
placed in the containers / vials. Each vial was properly labeled.
Classification and identification of Specimens
The specimens will be classified and identified using some keys of identification. Microscopy will be also done to examine
the detailed parts and aid in the identification.
The specimens will be brought to Higher Institution for further identification of an expert.

Determination of Biodiversity Indices

The following measures were used to determine the species richness and diversity of benthic invertebrates; density,
relative density, biodiversity index
a. Density = Number / kick net
b. Relative Density = Density of species A x 100
Density of All species
c. Shannon – Weiner Index = P1 x ( log 2 P1 )
P1 ( M1 /N)

Determination of Biotic Water Quality (Bode,1999)

A x B = Product ( A x B / 10 )
(Number In each taxon) (Biotic Value )

Invertebrate Count to Determine Stream Health - Beck Biotic Index (Pollock, 2009)
BI – Beck Index
BI – 2n1 + n2 ( 2 x 8 + 5 ) = 21
n1 = number of class 1 genera identified
n2 = number of class 2 genera identified

Physical and Chemical Analyses

Water samples will be collected in a sterile container and subjected to microbiological and chemical analyses at the
Department of Science and Technology, Butuan City.

Photography
Photographs of the sampling site and important morphological characteristics of the specimens will be made.
