Guidelines for Ling100 Final Project (Summer 2023)

For your Study Group’s Final Project, relaAve to the domain that you are working on (Morphology, Syntax,
SemanAcs, PragmaAcs, Phonology), you will be preparing three acAviAes:

• Ac#vity 1: A short (3-minute, roughly 3 slides) oral presenta#on with accompanying slides where you present
your findings. Discuss the “what”, “how”, and “why” of how you broke Chat GPT, as follows:

(1) What can Chat BPT (not) do? (1 slide, with text, visualizaAon & layout)
Iden#fy the tasks that you used to “break” Chat GPT relaAve to the domain that you are invesAgaAng.
Indicate which task were successful in breaking Chat GPT, and the criteria that you used to conclude that
Chat GPT failed.

[Hint: Make sure that you have a solid understanding of the domain that you are invesAgaAng, as the
tasks are domain-specific. For example, if your Study Group is working on Morphology, make sure that the
tasks that you are using to test Chat GPT are morphological one. Similarly for Syntax, SemanAcs,
PragmaAcs, and Phonology. You will likely have to consult the research literature.]

(2) How does Chat BPT do what it does? (1 slide, with text, visualizaAon & layout)
Using human behavior as a baseline, describe exactly how Chat GPT is failing.

[Hint: Make sure that you have an understanding of how humans would behave when presented with the
task you are using to test Chat GBT. You will likely have to consult the research literature.]

(3) Why does Chat GBT behave as it does? (1 slide, with text, visualizaAon & layout)
Using the design features of human language as a baseline, provide an explicit comparison of exactly why
Chat GPT’s performance diverges from the human baseline.

[Hint: Make sure that you have an understanding of Chat GPT’s design features. You will likely have to
consult research literature.]

[The day before the oral presentaAon, all Study Groups will submit their slides as .pdf to Canvas. This will
give the Teaching Team Ame to prepare a slide deck and ensure that a smooth presentaAon schedule.
PresentaAon schedule will be posted on Canvas.]

Ac#vity 2: Each student will be a member of a Ques#on Team, with each QuesAon Team assigned to lead the
quesAon following each presentaAon. [The QuesAon Teams will be posted in the presentaAon schedule.]

Ac#vity 3: Each Study Group will submit a wriGen summary of their project (2 pages), along with a
bibliography of the research materials that they used to complete the project (1 page) and a descrip#on of
how each member of the Study Group contributed to the final project (1 page). [4 pages in all, submi`ed to
Canvas as .pdf file.]
