Short bio of Ryan York

Biography of Ryan York

Ryan York is fifth year graduate student in the Biology department at Stanford University. His research is
concerned with how variation in genes affects the structure and function of the brain. He is particularly
interested in how the genome and circuits of neurons lead to the vast differences in courtship behavior
among the cichlid fish of Lake Malawi. Previously Ryan worked at Caltech studying evolutionary novel
neurons in the human brain important for unique human behaviors. As an undergraduate at UCLA he
studied a variety of topics including gene networks in songbird brains, behavioral deficits associated with
frontotemporal dementia, homelessness in Venice Beach, CA, and how the brain judges whether or not
someone is "nerdy".
