LABORATORY EXERCISE 5
ESTIMATION and HYPOTHESIS TESTING FOR ONE AND TWO SAMPLES

Direction: Write your answers and solutions neatly, clearly, and legibly on the space provided per item.

1. An experiment with 25 randomly selected samples found out that the sample mean temperature for
a certain city in July was 27.35⁰C, with a sample standard deviation of 1.25⁰C. Assuming that the
population is normally distributed, construct a 95% confidence interval.

2. A company claims that the mean net weight of the contents of its cereal boxes is at least 510 grams.
Suppose you want to test whether or not the claim of the company is true. From a randomly selected
sample of 43 boxes, the mean net weight is 512.2 grams. Test the claim at 10% level of significance.
Assume that the population standard deviation is 7.54 grams.

3. An educator wants to compare the effects of two different teaching methods. Two classes of students
are selected at random; class 1 receives method 1, and class 2 receives method 2. A comprehensive
standard examination is administered to both classes to determine the effectiveness of the two
methods at the end of the test period. The data are shown below. Test the claim at 𝛼 = 0.05 that
the two different teaching methods are significantly different. Assume that the variables are normally
distributed.
Class 1 Class 2
Sample Size (𝑛) 58 64
Mean Test Score (𝑋̅) 88 80
Variance of Test Score (𝑠 2 ) 56 56

4. Listed below are the systolic blood pressure measurements (in mmHg) taken from the right and left
arms of the same woman (based on data from “Consistency of Blood Pressure Differences Between
the Left and Right Arms” by Eguchi, et. Al., Archives of Internal Medicine, Vol. 167). At 𝛼 = 0.05, can
we conclude that there is a difference between the blood pressure measurements from the two
arms.

Left Arm 175 169 182 146 144

5. A new drug is proposed to lower cholesterol. Thirty participants are enrolled in the trial and are
randomly assigned to receive either the new drug or a placebo. Each participant is asked to take the
assigned treatment for 6 weeks. At the end of 6 weeks, each patient’s cholesterol level is measured
and the sample statistics are given in the accompanying table. At 0.05 level of significance, test the
claim that there is equality of variance between the cholesterol level for both treatments. Assume
that the variables are normally distributed.
