HPS 493A - ePortfolio

Summer 2023

Due: Monday, 7/31/23 by midnight

Rationale: The public health internship is meant to be a learning experience. There are a number of
Career Professional Tools that are created by the student during the internship, which help to launch
the student intern from the learning experience to a future professional career. By developing your
ePortfolio, you will have a platform to feature your best work from your undergraduate experience as
you launch your professional career. (Some students choose to include their ePortfolio URL on their
resumes, business cards, cover letters, and/or in email signatures.)

This assignment also helps fulfill the College’s commitment to the Council on Education for Public
Health’s core competency: Students will be able to communicate using a variety of media.

grammatical errors. Minimal spelling or
grammatical errors.

Getting Started:
1. Watch this short video to learn more about why you are creating an ePortfolio:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvqBORISA5k

2. Choose any public or sharable ePortfolio platform. Students in past semesters have had the best
success with building a free site on the following platforms:
a. WIX – http://www.wix.com/
b. Weebly – https://www.weebly.com/

Keep in mind that ePortfolios (as all social media do) have varying levels of “openness.” Some
students have also created ePortfolio sites using Google Sites, Adobe Portfolio, and Adobe Spark.
But … some of these sites charge and/or make it difficult to ensure all pages and artifacts are
open access. All ePortfolio pages need to at least be open access during the internship course so
that it can be viewed for grading purposes.
Instructions for ePortfolio:
Create a PowerPoint of at least six slides highlighting your internship experience.
• Include (at a minimum): (1) Intro slide with the name/location of your internship; (2) details of
your activities and/or accomplishments; (3) conclusion with a couple things you’ve learned.
Include your PPT presentation to your ePortfolio site.
• Embed your PPT into your portfolio site. Make sure permissions are cleared to see this, and that
the size on your site is large enough for viewers to see.
a. Note: check the timing of slides so that they do not auto-advance too quickly.
• Include your LinkedIn Profile URL on your portfolio. This should be easy to see on your ePortfolio.
(You don’t want someone who is interested to have to hunt for contact information.) Note: this
is not one of your four artifacts.
• Include a short summary / biography on your home page. This will introduce your reader to who
you are, tell them a little about you, and offer a quick overview of the skills and talents you bring
to a work or graduate school setting. Think of this as similar to the “About” section on your
LinkedIn profile page.

Choose FOUR Artifacts to include on your ePortfolio.

• These Artifacts allow you to highlight your best work from your undergraduate career and
provide supporting material to your resume. You should choose artifacts from your internship,
but you should also choose artifacts from classes and other experiences.
These artifacts are in addition to the PPT and LinkedIn that you’ve included.
a. Examples of Artifacts:
i. documents, forms, websites or videos created during your internship that you
had a hand in creating;
ii. class projects, papers, or presentations;
iii. documents, forms, websites, or videos of your extracurricular activities that you
created;
iv. links to your website projects;
v. creative writing papers, poetry, or business presentations; etc. (embed or link to
the actual document – make sure permissions are cleared)
b. The ePortfolio is a creative piece, so do not feel limited to your work in your public health
internship. You can (and should) include Artifacts from throughout your education and/or
extracurricular activities. Just be sure that you have Artifacts that you can upload that
encapsulate the experience and show your reader your work.
c. With each Artifact, include a description of the work you uploaded.
i. Explain what the Artifact is, and for what class or experience you created it.
ii. If you are including an Artifact that was a Group Project, be sure to list your
specific contributions to the project or collaboration.
NOTES:
• Resumes and/or Cover Letters do NOT count as artifacts. These are standard job application
materials, not unique and dynamic artifacts/examples of your personal learning experiences.
• You are discouraged from including photos of people other than yourself unless you have their
written permission.

SUBMITTING ON D2L:
• D2L requires that you submit a brief Word document, a screen shot of your ePortfolio site,
and/or a copy of your PPT.
• Copy and paste the URL for your ePortfolio in the comments section of the D2L Assignment
Dropbox.
**Be sure to log out of your account and test your link to make sure that you are listing a
working website URL.
