Task: Analysing Conversational Data

Objective: To analyse the pragmatic aspects of a recorded conversation or dialogue- at least 7-

10 minutes.

Instructions:

▪ Record a conversation or dialogue in a natural setting (with permission from the

participants) or find an existing conversation recording online.
▪ Transcribe the conversation, ensuring accuracy in representing the speech and
nonverbal elements.
▪ Analyse the conversation using pragmatic discourse analysis techniques and address
the following aspects:
A. Speech Acts: Identify and categorize the speech acts performed in the conversation
(e.g., requests, offers, apologies).
B. Turn-Taking and Adjacency Pairs: Examine the turn-taking patterns and identify
adjacency pairs (sequences of utterances with a specific relationship, e.g., question-
answer, greeting-response).
C. Politeness Strategies: Analyse the politeness strategies employed by the participants
(e.g., positive and negative politeness, face-threatening acts).

D. Implicatures: Identify any implicatures or indirect meanings conveyed in the

conversation and analyse their context and effects.
E. Cultural and Contextual Factors: Consider the influence of cultural and contextual
factors on the conversation (e.g., social roles, power dynamics, shared knowledge).

Write a pragmatic discourse analysis report that presents your findings, including transcriptions
and analysis, and includes a discussion on the implications of your observations.
Submit your report according to the guidelines provided by your instructor.

Note: It is important to obtain consent from participants and ensure privacy and ethical
considerations when recording conversations. If recording a conversation is not possible or
permitted, you can find online conversation recordings or use transcribed dialogues from
reputable sources for analysis.
