Why Organizational Leadership is Not Sustainable in Bangladesh?

Organizational leadership is a vital aspect of every organization that aims to achieve its goals and
objectives. It refers to the ability of individuals to lead, motivate, and influence others towards the
attainment of organizational goals. In Bangladesh, organizational leadership is facing a lot of challenges
that make it unsustainable. In this article I’ll try to explore the reasons why organizational leadership is
not sustainable in Bangladesh and what can be done to address these challenges.

Introduction
In recent years, Bangladesh has made significant progress in terms of economic growth and
development. However, the country is still facing a lot of challenges, including poverty, corruption,
political instability, and inadequate leadership. One of the critical issues that are affecting the
sustainability of organizational leadership in Bangladesh is the lack of ethical values, transparency, and
accountability. This article I’ll highlight the reasons why organizational leadership is not sustainable in
Bangladesh.

Lack of Ethical Values in Leadership

One of the significant challenges facing organizational leadership in Bangladesh is the lack of ethical
values. Many leaders in the country prioritize personal gain over the interests of their organizations and
the people they serve. This lack of ethics and integrity leads to corruption, favoritism, and nepotism,
which ultimately affects the sustainability of organizational leadership.

Political Interference in Leadership

Another reason why organizational leadership is not sustainable in Bangladesh is political interference.
The political climate in the country is highly volatile, and political parties often interfere with the
operations of organizations. Political leaders influence the appointment of leaders and staff, which
affects the sustainability of organizational leadership. In some cases, political leaders also use
organizations for their political gain, which hinders their ability to serve the interests of their
stakeholders.

Cultural Factors
Cultural factors also play a significant role in the sustainability of organizational leadership in
Bangladesh. In Bangladesh, there is a strong cultural emphasis on hierarchy and authority. This cultural
mindset often results in leaders who are authoritarian and do not value the opinions or feedback of
their subordinates. This can create an unhealthy work environment, leading to high turnover rates and a
lack of sustainability in leadership.

Inadequate Leadership Development Programs

The lack of adequate leadership development programs is also a significant challenge facing
organizational leadership in Bangladesh. Many leaders in the country lack the necessary skills and
competencies required to lead organizations effectively. The absence of leadership development
programs makes it difficult for organizations to identify and develop competent leaders, which affects
their sustainability.

Poor Governance and Management Practices

The governance and management practices in many organizations in Bangladesh are not up to par.
Many organizations lack clear policies and procedures for decision-making, which affects their
effectiveness and efficiency. Poor governance and management practices also lead to conflict, which
ultimately affects the sustainability of organizational leadership.

Lack of Transparency and Accountability

Transparency and accountability are essential components of sustainable organizational leadership.
However, in Bangladesh, many organizations lack transparency and accountability, which affects their
ability to serve their stakeholders effectively. The lack of transparency and accountability leads to
mistrust among stakeholders, which ultimately affects the sustainability of organizational leadership.

High Turnover of Leaders

The high turnover of leaders is another significant challenge facing organizational leadership in
Bangladesh. Many leaders in the country do not stay in their positions for long, which affects the
continuity and sustainability of organizations. The high turnover of leaders also affects the
implementation of long-term strategies, which affects the ability of organizations to achieve their goals.

Inadequate Resources for Leadership Development

The lack of adequate resources for leadership development is also a significant challenge facing
organizational leadership in Bangladesh. Many organizations do not have the necessary resources to
invest in leadership development programs, which affects their ability to develop competent leaders.
The absence of adequate resources also affects the sustainability of organizations since they cannot
invest in long-term strategies.

Lack of Gender Diversity in Leadership

Gender diversity is an essential aspect of sustainable organizational leadership. However, in Bangladesh,
women are significantly underrepresented in leadership positions. The lack of gender diversity in
leadership affects the ability of organizations to serve the interests of their stakeholders effectively. It
also affects the ability of organizations to address the diverse needs and perspectives of their
stakeholders.

Lack of Training and Development

Another factor that contributes to the lack of sustainable organizational leadership in Bangladesh is the
lack of training and development opportunities for leaders. Many individuals in leadership positions
have been promoted based on their seniority rather than their leadership abilities. As a result, they may
lack the skills and knowledge needed to lead effectively. Additionally, there is a lack of formal training
programs for leadership development in Bangladesh, which further contributes to the issue.
Conclusion
Organizational leadership is not sustainable in Bangladesh due to a combination of political, cultural,
economic, and educational factors. Without addressing these underlying issues, it will be difficult to
create a sustainable culture of leadership in the country. However, by investing in leadership
development programs and creating a culture that values sustainable leadership practices, it is possible
to overcome these challenges and create a brighter future for organizations in Bangladesh.
