Case Based Learning (Asynchronous Learning Task)

This is an individual activity. Each student in the group will be assigned to a particular disaster
victim in the case scenario.

The following are guidelines in writing your written report.

 Identify all the cues that can be

used to assess the client.

 What is the primary problem

requiring treatment for each
client?

 Make a triage diagram for each

client, the START and
JUMPSTART Triage system
algorithms will serve as your
guides.

 Classify each patient according to the appropriate triage system and

rationalize or explain why you designated that category.

Your output will be submitted in PDF format through the Assignment tab.
START Adult Triage
JumpSTART Pediatric Multiple Casualty Incident Triage

Use JumpSTART if the Patient appears to be a child.

Use an adult system, such as START, if the patient appears to be a young adUlt.

MASS CASUALTY INCIDENT CASE SCENARIO
A group of first grade students from a private school in Angeles City with their
teacher/chaperones are enroute via school busses for a field trip to Bulacan. As the caravan of
busses, filled to capacity, slow for their exit off the highway, a speeding trailer truck behind the
last bus crashes into it, forcing that bus forward into the bus ahead. The back of the rear bus is
crushed into the mid-section; the forward bus is overturned. The highway patrol who witnessed
the collision calls in that the truck driver is unresponsive. Some children have been ejected from
a bus, some are trapped and a few are walking along the road appearing dazed.
The nearest hospital is a small rural hospital. You are in charge of the ED on this day.
Using the appropriate triage algorithm, categorize each of the victims and provide justification
for selecting that category.
