PTE SPEAKING
1. Read Aloud (Speaking and Reading) (Very important and easy task)

This is the first task of speaking and you will get around 6-8 of these in your exam.

In this task, you will be given a text on your screen which can be up to 60 words long. You will have
30-35 seconds to prepare before the recording starts. Once the recording starts, you will have
around 30-40 seconds to give your response. You will get points both in reading and speaking from
this task.

Sample Question

Look at the text below. In 40 seconds, You must read this text aloud as naturally and clearly as
possible. You have 40 seconds to read aloud

A smoking ban is a public policy that includes criminal laws and health regulations that prohibit
smoking in certain public places and workspaces. There are varying definitions of smoking employed
in this legislation. The strictest definitions define smoking as being the inhalation of any tobacco
substance while the loosest define smoking as possessing any lit tobacco product.

While reading make sure you pronounce the words ending with ‘s’ and ‘ed’ properly.

2. Repeat Sentence (Speaking and Listening) (Very important task for listening)

In this task, you will hear a sentence which will be around 8-16 words long. Once the audio stops,
you will have to repeat back the same sentence. You will have around 10-12 of these in the exam. It
is very important to get the content right as this will give you around 20-25 points in listening.

THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT TASK IN PTE AND YOU SHOULD PRACTICE THESE A LOT.

In the exam, sentences will be very lengthy (around 14-16 words) and fast.

3. Describe Image (Speaking)

In this task, you will get an image on your screen which can be a line graph, bar graph, pie chart, data
table, process cycle, picture, Venn diagram or a map. You will have 25 seconds to prepare for the
task before recording starts. Once the recording starts, you will have to describe the image in 40
seconds. Below are few of the examples.

The given image gives us information about the __(Title)__. It is a very beautiful image and I have to
speak for 40 seconds about this image. There are a lot of different (elements) in the image which are

minimum. Furthermore, there are different trends, variations and numbers in the image which are
0123456789. There are different colours in the image which are blue, green, white and red. To
conclude, the image gives a lot of information about the __(Title)__.

If you get a map replace the word “element” with region. (Maximum with North direction and
Minimum with South direction)

If you get a process cycle, replace the word “element” with stages. (Maximum with First stage and
Minimum with second stage)

The given image gives us information about the__(Percentage of population in urban areas)__. It is a
very beautiful image and I have to speak for 40 seconds about this image. There are a lot of different
(elements) in the image which are (world, Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America ,North America, 60, 42,
64, 87). (North America) is maximum whereas (Africa) is minimum. Furthermore, there are different
trends, variations and numbers in the image which are 0123456789. There are different colours in
the image which are blue, green, white and red. To conclude, the image gives a lot of information

4. Re-tell lecture (Speaking and Listening)

You will hear an audio lecture which will go for around 60-90 seconds. While the audio is going on,
you can make as many notes as you can. Once the audio stops, you will only have 10 seconds to
prepare before the recording starts. Once the recording starts, you will have to re-tell the lecture in
40 seconds. You will get around 2-4 re-tell lectures in your exam.

Make sure you repeat a lot of keywords from the lecture in your response. Content is important in
re-tell lecture as this contributes to your listening score. Always try to re-tell the lecture for at least
30 seconds and always provide a conclusion.

5. Answer Short Questions (Speaking and Listening)

This is the last task of the speaking section. You will hear an audio “question” which is general
knowledge based. You will have to give the answer in around 2-3 words. You get 1 point for correct
answer and zero for incorrect.
