INTRODUCTION

Chickens are an important domestic fowl worldwide, especially for nutritious flesh

as a source of food. There are two kinds of crossbred chickens compared to local

chickens is that their productive age is shorter; only 30 days are needed to reach 1.25

kg as opposed to 4 to 5 months for local chickens (Unang, 2003)

Garden snail is very common crawling organism we mistaken as unedible, dirty

creatures. This Helix aspersia Muller is a traditional French appetizer. In Nigeria, mother

and child hunting snails as their traditional bonding activity. According to United States

Department of Agriculture’s Nutrient Database, that one 3 ounce serving of snails is

about 76 calorie. ( www.foodofy.com/snails.html). The nutritional value of snail are the

following Ca is about 10mg , Fe 3.5mg, Mg 250 mg ,P 272mg. It is high in protein,

carbo-free, fat free and sugar free. It has also vitamin B12, omega 3 and Selenium. This

nutrients helps to maintain the health of the heartbeat.( healthy

eating.sfgate.com/nutrition-eating snails-3556 html). In France, during fasting it is

considered as their super food. They called it ESCARGOT . Helix aspersia contains

glycolic acid which helps in removing dead skin cells, collagen and elastin for skin

structure allantoin for generation. The garden snail can control the weight and fats, its

serum mucin, can cure inflammation and antioxidants and tryptophan a chemical

substance which is needed in our brain to activate serotonin to help us relax. The

average snail is about 80% of water, 15% protein and 2.4% fats. (Hsuze V., Tran

General Objective

To determine the growth performance of broiler chicken ( Gallus gallus

domesticus) as affected by ground dried snails meat incorporated on the diet.

Specific Objective

a) To determine the effectiveness of snails meat on the growth of broiler chicken

in terms of weight gain, final weight, within a short period of time as affected

by ground dried snails meat on the diet.

b) To determine which levels of ground dried snails meat will give the best result
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Broiler Industry

Chicken broiler and egg production are the most progressive animal enterprise in
the Philippines today. The poultry industry in fact began as the backyard enterprise but
has shifted to the formation of very large integrated contract farming operations.

Broiler farming is the most recent specialized field in the Philippines. This is the
growing of meat-type chicken essentially for meat production. Stocks used for this
purpose are so –called broiler type chicks which are known for their fast growth, meaty
conformation and good feed conservation. Broiler chicks are grown for a period of only
about 6-7 weeks. At this age, they are marketed and slaughtered for meat.

The growth of poultry industry in the Philippines has been impressive but its
problems include inefficient management and the prevalence of many destructive
poultry diseases and parasites that cannot be ignored. The chicken is the most
exploited species of poultry, which is utilized for food production in the whole world.
Scientific researchers have been done on this species for past centuries and it is still the
focus of the present and future experimentation. In the Philippines chicken rank first,
while ducks ranks second in economic importance as source of meat and eggs. Breed
of chicken can be classified by its utility ( BAR,2012)

Sun Drying and Grinding

Sun drying is a type of food preservation since old times. This is to lengthen the
shelf life of a commodity. This type of preservation also helps to destroy other micro
organisms that can cause the food/feed to spoil specially in meat. Dryness of the meat
depends on the length of hour being exposed, type of meat and the thickness of meat
slice.

Grinding is a process where large particles being reduced into small pieces, fine
and powdery in form in order to ease in mixing, eating, stuffing, cooking and packaging.
MATERIALS AND METHODS

Location and Duration of the Study

The study was conducted at Davao Oriental State College of Science and
Technology Banay-Banay Campus, Brgy. Poblacion, Banabanay, Davao Oriental from
March to April 2017.

Experimental Design and Treatment

The birds were randomly distributed into 3 treatments replicated 3 times with 1 bird per
replication. Data gathered were analysed through Analysis of Variance ( ANOVA) in a
Completely Randomized Design (CRD). Treatments were administered through the
feeds.

The treatments are as follows:

T1 75grams dried snails meat

T2 50 grams dried snails meat

T3 Control

Experimental Birds

Twenty-seven (27) heads of broiler chicken were used in the study. The birds
were raised in the Slatted floor type using bamboo for about 2.5 cm width and space
between slats about 1 inch for 21 days. After brooding, the birds were randomly
distributed in their respective treatments. Treatments were applied on the 20 th day of
march until the 9th day of April 2017. A total of 21 days of treatment application.
Preparation of Ground Dried Snail

The garden snail was collected at the campus surrounding of DOSCST-San

Isidro, washed with water, boiled, shelled and sliced the meat thinly and sun dried for
how many days until it completely dries up. After drying, it has been grounded/pounded
to achieve its fine texture. It is now ready to mix with the commercial feed available.

Feeding Management

Feeding was provided three times a day to the birds.

Data Gathered

Initial Weight

The weights of the birds were taken at the start of the study and it was recorded
as initial weight.

Final Weight

This was obtained by weighing the birds at the end of the study.

Weight Gain

This was obtained by computing the final weight minus initial weight of the birds.

Feed Consumption

The total feed consumed of the birds for the whole duration of the study and this
was obtained by subtracting the feed offered from the feed left.

Water Management

Clean drinking water was made available for 24hours until termination of the
study. 3 days interval mixed with electrolytes ex. Vetracin Premium
Feed Efficiency

This was obtained by dividing the total feed consumption by the weight gain of
the chicken, as shown below.

Feed efficiency = Total Feed Consumption

Weight gain

All the data were statistically analysed using the analysis of variance in completely
randomized Design (CRD). Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) was used to
compare the treatments means.

Result show that the levels of supplemented ground dried snails meat had no
significant effects on the birds final weight, weight gain, feed consumption, feed
efficiency.

Thus the author thus recommends treatments 1 (75 grams) of ground dried snails meat
should be given in the solution and diet of broiler chicken.
