Sonnet

In the black velvet depths of the twilight,

Tectonic plates shift beneath the city,
Unbeknownst to the sleepers of the night
Gold light shining on the street, so pretty.

But Mother Nature has other cruel plans,

Buildings shiver, shatter, crumble, and fall.
Falling rocks and glass cannot be outran,
Gravity, determined to catch them all.

Families scramble while young babies cry,

Humans against nature, fighting for life.
Gaia, the earth god, what a way to die
Beauty blemished with the pock-marks of strife.

The people of Turkey, homes in ruin

Changing planet, safety an illusion.

Inspired by the earthquake in Turkey, person vs nature.
