The Legend Of Tulap And Old Grandfather

Long ago, in a wilderness in North Sulawesi, there was a ferocious giant named Tulap. Every
day, Tulap hunts humans and animals that enter the forest where he lives to be used as food. As
usual, every morning Tulap made his way around the forest looking for prey. He walked through
the wilderness while putting on his eyes and ears. After walking for some distance, he suddenly
heard a noise not far in front of him.
"What sound is that?" Tulap muttered as he slowed his pace.
Tulap then hid behind the bushes. It was from behind the bushes that he peeked in the direction
the noise was coming from. Apparently, there was an old man who was looking for
firewood.“Hmm… I finally found a prey. Even though he is old, that person is still delicious to
eat,” he muttered.
Tulap couldn't wait to catch the old man. He came out of hiding.
“Hey, Old Man! What are you doing here?" asked Tulap with a booming voice.
Hearing that voice, the Old Man became frightened. Originally, he intended to run away. But he
realized that even if he ran the giant would definitely be able to catch him.
"Sa... sa... I'm looking for firewood, Mr. Giant," replied the old man nervously and his body was
trembling.
“Ha… ha… ha…,” Tulap laughed out loud.
The old man was getting scared.“Excuse me, Mister Giant. Please, don't hurt me,” whined the
Old Man.
Tulap laughed again and said to the old man.
"Okay, I won't eat you. But, will you come with me? Accompany me to look for birds for our
lunch later," persuaded the Tulap.
The old man actually knew that Tulap's persuasion was just a trick. He knew that he would
definitely be his meal. However, because he was afraid that the giant would be angry and
immediately devour him, the old man complied with his invitation.
The two of them walked through the wilderness. The old man was told to walk in front then
Tulap followed him from behind. The Old Man looked increasingly frightened. He occasionally
looked back for fear that the giant would eat him from behind. A moment later, the Old Man
suddenly stopped.
“Hey, Old Man. Why did you stop?" asked Tulap surprised.

2
"Sorry Mister. In front of us there are lots of needles and pins,” replied the Old Man.
“Pick up and take all those things home!” cried Tulap.
The old man picked up all the needles and pins stuck in the ground and put them in his trouser
pocket. After that, the two of them continued their journey through the forest, climbing hills,
descending valleys, and crossing several rivers. Not long after, they found a banana tree that was
growing thick.Tulap immediately plucked some ripe bananas and ordered the old man to bring
them.
They've had enough going. Tulap, who was getting tired, asked the old man to rest for a while
under a shady tree. While resting, Tulap's eyes suddenly fixed on a stick that is usually used to
hit sago. When they were about to leave the place, Tulap told the old man to bring the stick.
They had only taken a few steps when suddenly a large male rat with a white tail flashed by.
Luckily the rat was agile to avoid being stepped on by the Tulap's feet. The giant also invited
him to come with them.
"Hey, mouse! Come with us to look for good food, "invited the Tulap. The mouse complied with
Tulap's invitation for fear of being preyed upon. The three of them continued their journey. Not
long after, they met a giant centipede. The Tulap also invited him to participate. Now, the Tulap
is the one who is at the front, followed by the Old Man, the rat, and the centipede which is the
very back. After a few meters of walking, suddenly heard the chirping of a Mutuo bird. The
Tulap entourage simultaneously stopped.
"Wow, this must be delicious food," said the Tulap. When Tulap was about to catch it, it turned
out that the bird was laying eggs. The giant persuaded him to come with them.
"Hey, Mutuo bird. Come with us. Later you will lay eggs in my house," said the Tulap.
Finally, the Mutuo bird joined the Tulap group. They have gone farther. The giant looks weak
from hunger. Since this morning he has not eaten human flesh. Because he didn't want his evil
intentions to be found out, Tulap ordered the Old Man, the rat, the centipede, and the Mutuo bird
to walk first to his house.
"You guys wait at my house, I'll catch up later. I want to find food first for you, "said the Tulap.
"Yes, Mister Giant," replied the Old Man and the animals in unison. While Tulap was looking for
food, the Old Man and the three animals walked towards the evil giant's house. On the way,
suddenly a feeling of suspicion arises about the Tulap's behavior.
"Hey guys. I'm sure the Tulap will make us his meal, "said the old man."What should we do, Old
Man?" asked the mouse.
"Yes, Old Man. How can you deal with it?” added the centipede.
“Calm down, guys! We have to use a strategy,” said the Old Man.
The Old Man and the animals deliberated to find a way to destroy the beast. After planning the
strategy, they continued their journey. Arriving at the Tulap's house, they immediately carried

out the previously planned strategy. The rat was given the task of biting Tulap's ears while he
was sleeping. The centipede was in charge of biting Tulap's hand while washing his face in the
water reservoir. Meanwhile, the Mutuo bird is in charge of flapping its wings so that the lights go
out and dust gets into Tulap's eyes. The Old Man is in charge of placing needles and pins in front
of Tulap's bed, as well as some banana skins in front of the exit. When it was getting dark, the
Tulap returned to his house. Due to exhaustion, he went straight into the room and immediately
fell asleep with a very loud snoring.
"Guys, let's get started!" cried Old Man,
"The giant is asleep."
They immediately act to carry out their respective duties. First of all, the mouse bit the Tulap ear.
The giant simultaneously woke up and got out of bed. When he jumped in front of the bed, his
feet were pricked by the needle and pin that had been placed by the Old Man. He screamed in
pain and headed to the kitchen to wash his face. At that moment, the Mutuo bird flapped its
wings three times so that the lights in the house went out. The giant's eyes were also covered in
dust.In a state of complete darkness, the Tulap walked groping towards the water reservoir in the
kitchen. When he took the water, the centipede that had been waiting immediately bit his hand.
The poor giant screamed again in pain as he ran towards the exit. While passing through the exit,
his foot slipped because he stepped on a banana skin that had been placed there by the Old Man.
Needless to say, the giant fell backwards.Seeing this situation, the Old Man did not waste the
opportunity. He immediately hit the Tulap head with a stick he brought from the forest. The
ferocious giant was finally killed. With the death of Tulap, the old man and his friends were
relieved because they were free from the threat of danger. They returned to their respective
residences. Since then, they have returned to live in peace without the Tulap's disturbance.
