OPEC

The Conference of the parties also known as COP27 kicked off this month with world leaders
showing up in numbers to discuss issues around the climate change that the planet faces. It is
based on the UN climate agreement signed in 1992 by the now attending parties and is set to
take place over a course of six days. Since then, a whopping one trillion tones of heat-trapping
carbon dioxide from fossil fuels have been released into the air making the planet 0.6 degrees
hotter. As a result, scientists are now more concerned than ever with the pace the planet is
warming. These effects have already been witnessed in many places including Asia and Africa.
Unfortunate, it has been the countries with the least contribution to the global emissions of
greenhouses that have been experiencing the adverse effects of climate change. Somalia is one
such country facing these challenges along with other countries in east Africa including Kenya,
Ethiopia and Djibouti. Currently, Somalia faces food insecurity, famine and its worst draught in
four decades. Millions of people are the brink of starvation in the country stemming from the
adverse effects of climate change.
