South Africa’s Stance on Cancun Summit on Climate Change:

South Africa & Brazil are one with India and China wanting developing countries to
only accept voluntary emission cuts and not have a legal binding agreement rift with
penalties. Developed countries and economies of USA and Europe should do more
to reduce their greenhouse Emission Gases to pre-1990 era (base year). South
Africa along with 194 nations are here to prepare a new climate protection treaty,
proposing major emissions cuts, launching a multibillion-dollar fund (Adaptation
Fund) to help poor nations adapt to climate change, help them in Capacitive
Building techniques and finalize a scheme to stop deforestation. Stronger efforts are
needed to contain the warming of the climate to no more than 3.6 degrees
Fahrenheit, a threshold scientists say is crucial to avert the most catastrophic effects
of the temperature increase. South Africa wants the creation of an African Green
Fund with $100 million to be channelled through credible institutions such as the
African Development Bank. South Africa along with African Union will place on the
table the continent’s continued marginalization in accessing green technologies.

The 2011 United Nations Climate Change Conference will be held in Durban, South
Africa, from 28 November to 9 December 2010. The conference is officially referred
to as the 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 17) to the United
Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and the 7th session
of the Conference of the Parties serving as the meeting of the Parties (CMP 6) to the
Kyoto Protocol. A primary focus of the conference will be to secure an international
climate agreement on the eve the Kyoto Protocol's 2012 expiration.
