Lab Report: Reaction Rates

Name

Objective: In this activity, you will perform a virtual investigation to determine how temperature affects the rate of a
chemical reaction.

Pre-Lab Questions
1. Explain how increasing the concentration of the reactants will affect a chemical reaction.
 The rate will increase
2. How does a catalyst affect the rate of a chemical reaction?
 Its going to increase the rate
3. Compare the average kinetic energy of molecules of a cold solution to the average kinetic energy of molecules in
a warm solution.
 The particles in the warm water will

Hypothesis and Variables

6. Record your hypothesis: the tablet in the warm water will have a faster reaction.

7. List the variables in your experiment:

Independent variable – water temp

Dependent variable – reaction of tablet

Controlled variables – same tablet, clear glass

Analysis and Conclusions

1. How did the temperature affect the time it took for the antacid tablet to react in water? The higher the temperature
the faster the reaction would be.

2. Review your data. Did your experiment support your hypothesis? Support your claim with data from your experiment.
Yes it did the warm water has a faster reaction than the cold water.

3. What evidence indicates that a chemical reaction took place? The tablets caused foam to appear making it into a
chemical reaction.

4. Predict what would happen if the same experiment was conducted with room temperature water. Use evidence from
the experiment to support your claim. The reaction would probably slower than hot water.

5. What other technique (besides temperature) could be used to increase the reaction rate between water and the
antacid tablet? Use what you have learned about reaction rates to explain. Another technique could be mixing the water
and the antacid tablet causing it to react together a lot more faster.
