Since an ever-increasing popularity of films over the past years, it has been often argued that movies are solely
a source of entertainment. Nevertheless, many hold the view that films also provide tangible benefits in the
educational aspect. This essay will explore both viewpoints and argue that movies have its own merits not only
in entertaiment but also education.

On the one hand, there are various reasons that entertainment is one of the main source of entertainment.
Watching films means that they are spending their time enjoying the genres they relish in a relaxing way,
which alleviates constant stress caused by work and boost endorphins. There are a variety of genres, from
thrillers to romance, from actions to science-fiction, et cetera., meeting the audience’s requirements. Since
different kinds of movies can satisfy almost every taste, films play an indispensable role in people’s relaxation.
For instance, after an exhausting day, watching comedies render viewers in a good mood thanks to the
laughter it brings about.

On the other hand, it is undeniable that movies have noticeable impacts on other aspects, including education.
In this modern age, a film can be interpreted in several languages, which allows the audience to learn foreign
languages by hearing the native characters conversing. People have chances to acquire new vocabulary and
train listening skill with conversations in films. They can also imitate the accent and accordingly boost their
skills. Besides, watching a foreign film broadens the viewer’s horizons with knowledge in all fields. For
example, documentaries provides the viewer with the knowledge about its culture and lifestyle indigenous to
a particular region at a specific time, or viewers can gain knowledge about the galaxy through science fiction
movies. Take ‘The boy in the striped pyjamas’ for example, it vividly depicts the severity of World War II,
helping students grasp the lessons effectively. Furthermore, watching films at an early age contributes to
shape a youngster’s opinion through the content they impart to children. In the years of childhood, children
begin to form their perspective, through all they see, hear and are taught. Thus, watching films with
educational content is a good way to instill virtue, such as patience or integrity, into children.

In conclusion, although there are different views about the values of films, I personally believe that movies
bring about desirable merits in terms of entertainment and education as well.
