AN ANALYSIS OF EDUCATIONAL VALUES IN “SPIDERMAN 2” MOVIE

ABSTRACT: Movie, also known as a film, is one of types in visual communication. It

shows the moving pictures that tell a story in a cinema or on television. In this way,
language learning will become more enjoyablebecause movie is not only as interesting
media in learning but also it can be introduced for the people with educational values.Then,
watching movie can help to develop people's motivations in learning English. This
research is entitled “An Analysis of Educational Values in “Spiderman 2” Movie”. The aim
of this research is to find and describe the educational values in Spiderman 2 movie.
Spiderman 2 was directed by Sam Raimi in 2004, it was written by Alvin Sargent from a
story by Alfred Gough, Miles Millar, and Michael Chabon. It told about a man who named
Peter Parker, he was journalist who bitten by a genetically engineered super spider on his
hand so that he became a super hero and people called him “Spiderman”. The writer used
descriptive method in doing this research. In collecting the data, the writer used two
sources, those were primary and secondary sources. The result of research showed that
there were ten educational values in Spiderman 2 movie, there weresupport, optimist,
bravery, never give up, respect, care, confident, motivation, responsibility, and sacrifice.

INTRODUCTION language is used by people from all over

According to Richards, et, al., (2002,
p.283) :
“Language is the system of
human communication which
consists of the structural arrange-
ment of sounds (their written
representation) into large units,
e.g. morphemes, words, sen-
tences, utterances, etc”
Based on the quotation above, it can be
interpreted that language is used as a media
to communicate each other. Language
plays an important role because everyone
can tell and express their opinion, idea,
feeling or anything else to other people.
There are many languages in the world, one
of them is English. Nowadays, many
countries use English to communicate both
in spoken and written forms, as stated by
Floris (2010:42) that English as a native
the world as a second language and a
foreign language, however even functions
as a lingua franca among non-native
speakers. It means that learning English is
useful for people in communication,
although we come from different
countries.
In Indonesia, English is used as the
foreign language and also becomes the
main subject to be learnt from junior high
school until university level, as stated by
Supri (2012:297) that English is one of the
foreign languages that should be mastered
by people to compete in the current area of
globalization. In learning English, there are
four skills that should be mastered by
people, they are listening, speaking,
reading and writing. To master those four
skills, it should be supported by language
components such as vocabulary, pronun-
ciation and grammar.

There are many ways to learn English,
one of them is by using media, as stated by
Ihsanudin (2014, p.1) that media as a tool
to give the information, whether the
electronic or printed media to spread many
information. Movie is used as media in
learning English. Watching movie can give
many information, imaginations and
inspiration for people, as stated by
Almutari (2004:4) that most of movies
were adapted from books or novels, not
only that but also the movies can be
adapted from true story which give many
motivations and inspirations. To develop
people's motivations in learning English,
watching movie is not only as interesting
media but also it can be introduced for the
students about educational values.
One of the interesting movies is
“Spiderman 2” directed by Sam Raimi, it
was written by Alvin Sargent from a story
by Alfred Gough, Miles Millar, and
Michael Chabon. By watching movie,
people can take something to be learnt such
as psychological, conflict, educational
value, moral lesson, experience etc. For
this case, the writer focused on analysis of
educational values because it can influence
us to the positive way. We can know the
educational value from the conversation,
when Peter Parker said to himself “But I
can't. I will never forget these words: “With
great power comes great responsibility”. In
further development, the intrinsic factor in
the movie such as characterization
(protagonist and antagonist), plot and
conflict showed many educational values
for our life. Based on the explanations, the
writer expects the readers are able to get
many educational values by watching
Spiderman 2 movie.
Therefore, this study was intended to
analyze the educational values in
Spiderman 2 movie.
LITERATURE REVIEW
Educational Value
“Educational Value”, there are two
words “Educational and Value”. “Educa-
tional”, it comes from the word “educa-

tion”. In the development of globalization
era, education is really important for
people because education as efforts for
people to make development and
improvement in their life. As we know that
education is a systematic process which a
child or an adult acquires knowledge,
interaction, experience, skill and also
attitude. People really need education
because education does not just create to be
better people but it helps to solve the
various problems and also contribute to the
transformation of society. It is like the
processess which enable people to develop
all of their capabilities.
“Value”, as stated by Susilowati (2013,
p.29) that it can be regarded as something
precious, have a standard, show the quality,
and useful for humans. Value can be the
quality of anything desirable, useful,
interesting, good and important because
value is about good and bad. It is like the
criteria for judging and choosing. There are
a few of the expressions in positive and
negative values. Moreover, Uno (2007,
p.34) states that values are part of the
intrinsic nature of thing or simply a matter
of how humans respond to thing is
controversial. Different groups may hold
or prioritize different kinds of values
influencing social behavior.
From these words “Educational and
Value”, we can conclude that the processes
during people learn, do and get in schools,
homes, organization and many places or
sources. It can be like a standard to change
the behavior and attitude to be better. Each
kind of educational values can give people
the good inspiration and motivations for
their life.
Movie as a Good Method for Education
Some people love watching and
enjoying movie as a media and an artistic
form of self-expression in entertainment.
Movie is a series of moving pictures that
recorded with sounds to tell the story, it was
shown at the cinema, theater and also on
televison. Movie is also known as a film.
The visual images of film in a movie are

also a key element to their effectiveness as
a learning tool, as stated by Hughes-
Warrington (2007, p.38) that film is set in
past are more likely to come from visual
and aural information such as costume,
soundtrack and perhaps even an archaic
mode of speaking. There are various kinds
of movie that presented at the cinema,
theater and also on television. Every kinds
of movie has characteristics that always
amuse and entertain the audience.
According to Yulianti (2013, p.9), there
are several kinds of movies genres, those
are:
1. Action
The movie of this genre tells about the
struggle of a character to survive, live or
fight.
2. Comedy
The movie of this genre is the movie
relies on the humor or the funny thing from
the term of story and the term of character-
ization.
3. Horror
The movie of this genre usually presents
the stories that sometimes are beyond the
sense of humanity. It refers to mystery,
ghost, etc.
4. Thriller
The movie of this genre always puts
tension created not far from logical
elements.
5. Scientific
The movie of this genre has scientists in
the movie because of what they make, it
will be something of major conflict in the
groove.
6. Drama
The movies of this genre usually be the
one what watcher's favorite because it is
considered as a real picture of a life.
7. Romance
The movie of this genre tells the love
romance of couple or lovers. Most of
watchers who see will carry a romantic
atmosphere, played by players.
Movie can be an effective tool to convey
the messages for everyone who watches it.
In order that we have to be smart to filter
the movie story as media for education. By
educational value of movie, it can give the
learning as our motivation and inspiration.
According to Susilowati (2013, p.31), the
kinds of educational values that we can
find and get from a movie are :
1. Religious Educational Value
Religious is a realization that there are
deep in the depths of the human heart as
human nature. Religious educational value
has the aim to educate someone be better
again according to guidance of religion
and always remember God.
2. Moral Educational Value
Moral educational value in a movie is
shown through the story of movie itself.
The aim in the moral educational value is to
educate people to recognize the good and
bad things, what to avoid, what to do, so it
can create an order of human relations in
society are considered good, harmonious
and beneficial for the people, society, the
environments and natural surroundings.
3. Social Educational Value
Social educational value is the lesson
which is learned from social behavior and
procedures for social life. The social
educational value in the movie can be seen
from the reflection of a society which is
interpreted.
4. Cultural Educational Value
Cultural educational value is something
which is considered good and valuable for
a community, ethnic group, even a country.
The system of cultural education-al value
is a value which occupies a central and
important position within the framework
of a culture which is abstract and can be ex-
pressed or implied by observations on the
symptoms of a more tangible like behavior
and material things as a result of casting
value concepts through the action pattern.

METHOD
Method of Research
Descriptive method was used by the
writer in doing the study. Gravetter and
Forzano (2010, p.591) state that descrip-
tive method that involves measuring a
variable or set of variables as they exist
naturally to produce a description of
individual variables as they exist within a
specific group. In conducting the analysis,
the writer analyzed all of educational
values in “Spiderman 2” movie by using
descriptive method.
This descriptive used qualitative as a
method to focus on how to manage a study
descriptively. Qualitative method is a
research which does not involve the
calculation. Because of that, the
descriptive method was used as the method
of this research to find and explain all of
educational values in “Spiderman 2”
movie. The writer used the movie script to
analyze the data. She analyzed it based on
the conversation of the characters in the
film.
Data Collection
The writer collected the data from two
sources, those were primary and secondary
sources. The primary source was taken
from the movie and the script of the movie.
The secondary source was taken from the
book, website, and journal which
supported the analysis of research.
Data Analysis
In analyzing the data, the procedure of
research was referred to as tabulation, as
stated by Singh (2006, p.232) that analysis
of data means studying the tabulated
material in order to determine inherent
facts or meanings. To analyze the data,
the Spiderman movie was chosen by
the writer as the research subject, also
there were the following steps. Those
were :
1) Watching and understanding about
the movie;
2) Reading the script movie;
3) Identifying, classifying, and interpre-

movie;
4) Making conclusion.
RESULT
Movie is interesting media for the
process of learning because it is the
combination among moving pictures,
words, music and colors to tell the story.
According to Kindem (2000, p.1), movies
are both art and commerce, creative
expressions and part of a global enter-
tainment market. Movie can also can be
utilized as a tool for educating, informing
and socializing a program, as stated by
Effendy (2007, p.209) that film is a
powerful medium mass communication
that is not only for entertainment but also
for information and education. In doing the
study, the writer focused on finding out all
of educational values in “Spiderman 2”
movie. The writer analyzed the educational
values from the conversations among the
characters in the movie.
Based on the writer's analysis from the
Spiderman 2 movie script, she found that
there were ten educational values, those
were support, optimist, bravery, never give
up, respect, care, confident, motivation,
responsibility, and sacrifice.
Discussions
Based on the result above, there were
ten educational values. Here, the analysis
of each educational values from the movie
script based on the characters' conver-
sations in a movie, there were :
Conversation 1
The conversation between Henry Jackson,
Peter Parker and May Parker
Henry Jackson : Hi, Peter!
Peter Parker : Hey, Henry! You've grown
tall.
Henry Jackson : Okay. You take Spider
Man's pictures, right?
May Parker : Henry and I agree. We
don't see his picture in the
paper anymore.
Henry Jackson : He'll be back, right?
(Optimist)

Peter Parker: I don't know
May Parker: You'll never guess who he
wants to be... Spiderman
Peter Parker: Why?
May parker : He knows a hero when he sees
one. Too few ch aracters out
there, flying around like that,
saving old girls like me. And
Lord knows, a kid like Henry
needs a hero. Courageous,
self-sacrificing people.
Setting examples for all of us.
Everybody loves a hero.
People line up for them, cheer
them, scream their names.
And years later, they'll tell
how they stood in the rain for
hours just to get a glimpse of
the one who taught them how
to hold on a second longer. I
believe there's a hero in all of
us, that keeps us honest, gives
us strength, makes us noble,
and finally allows us to die
with pride, even though
sometimes we have to be
steady, and give up the thing
we want the most. Even our
dreams. and he wonders
where he's gone. He needs
him.(Support)
Based on the conversation 1 above, the
educational values of movie were support
and optimist.
1. Support
All of people ever got the support from
our parent, friends, and also other people.
By getting the support, it can give positive
impact for someone to make something
will better. We can see from May Parker's
conversation who has given support to
Spiderman indirectly.
2. Optimist
Then, the second educational value is
optimist. It is about the feeling of believe to
do and get something. Optimist is also the
tendency to expect or hope that things will
turn out well. The optimist feeling can be
seen when Henry Jackson said to Peter
Parker that “ He will be back, right?”. It can
teach us, when we lost our hopes but if
people give us support, it can make us
stronger to face the problem in our life,
even though it seems impossible to solve it
and also no matter about the result of the
ending, a person has to be optimistic in
doing something and believe it will
happen.
Conversation 2
The conversation between Peter Parker
and May Parker
Peter Parker : I'm responsible
May Parker : For what?
Peter Parker : For what happened to Uncle
Ben..
May Parker : But, you were at the library,
you were doing your
homework.
Peter Parker: He drove me to the library,
but I never went in.
May Parker : What do you mean?
Peter Parker : (sobbing) l went someplace
else, someplace where I
thought l could win some
money, to buy a car,
because I wanted to
impress Mary Jane. It
happened so fast.. I won the
money, the guy wouldn't
pay me, then he got
robbed.. the thief was
running towards me.. I
could have stopped him,
but I wanted to take
revenge.. I let him go, I let
him get away. He wanted a
car, he tried to take Uncle
Ben's car. Uncle Ben said
no... and then he shot him.
Uncle Ben was killed that
night for being the only one
who did the right thing. I
held his hand when he

died. I've tried to tell you so
many times...
The next conversation among them
May Parker: (Peter apologizes for a
previous conversation). We
needn't talk about it. Water
over the dam, or under the
bridge, or wherever you like
it, but... (happily sighs). You
made a brave move in
telling me the truth, and I'm
proud of you, and I thank
you, and I... I love you,
Peter. So very very much..
(hugs him) . (Bravery)
Based on the conversation 2, the writer
found the only one educational value. It
was bravery.
3. Bravery
Bravery is the big feeling from some-
one's heart to do and decide something
even though they do not know what will
happen in the future. From the conversa-
tion above, it taught us if we have a bravery
to do something right so we can get the
goodness of it. It is like Peter Parker did in
that movie.
Conversation 3
The conversation between Spiderman
and People on the train.
Train passenger: It's Spider-Man. Oh, my
God, this is it!
Spiderman : Tell everyone to hang on!
With his all power, finally Spiderman
can stop the train. Exhausted, he falls
unconscious and almost falls off, but for
the train passengers who grab him and pull
him to safety inside the carriage
Train passenger: We're slowing down.
Train passenger: (looking at Peter without
his mask) He's.. just a
kid. No older than my
son...

Spiderman regains consciousness, then
finding the passengers seeing him
unmasked, sits up abruptly
Train passenger: (reassuringly)It's all
right...
Two young boys approach Spiderman
Boy 1: We found something (Spiderman
is given his mask)
Boy 2: We won't tell nobody, it's good to
have you back, Spiderman...
Slowly, Spiderman dons his mask and
gets up, but then....
Doc Ock : (entering the carriage)
He's MINE!
Train Passenger: You want to get to him,
you gotta go through me!
All the other passengers take up his
claim and surround Spiderman.
4. Never give up
Never give up means keep trying and
do not stop to do something until we get our
goal. Never give up is the important thing
that people need to chase the dream.
Spiderman never gave up to survive saving
many people's life when he wanted to stop
the train. It taught us that never give up is
important. No matter what happened, we
do not give up easily. We have to keep
trying and surviving until we do it
successfully.
5. Respect
Respect is a good way to give
appreciation for someone. It is also
important thing in social roles. We can see
that how train passengers' way to respect
Spiderman. As we know, by respecting
each other, we can learn how to treat and
appreciate people.
Conversation 4
The conversation between Mary Jane
and Spiderman:

Mary Jane : (on the giant spider web) I
think I always knew all this
time who you really were.
Peter parker: Then you know why we can't
be together. Spiderman will
always have enemies. I can't
let you take that risk. I will
always be Spiderman. You
and I can never be...(Care)
Based on the conversation 4, the educa-
tional value was:
6. Care
When we love someone who literally
means that we care how our love are. We
wish to help someone who we love, and we
are interested in his or her well being. From
the conversation between Peter Parker and
Mary Jane, we can know that Peter Parker's
care to Mary Jane. He had responsibility to
protect Mary Jane because of his love.
Conversation 5
The conversation between Dr. Davis and
Peter Parker
Dr Davis :You say you can't sleep,
Heart break? Bad dreams
Peter parker: There is one dream where in
my dream, I'm Spiderman.
But I'm loosing my powers.
I'm climbing a wall but I
keep falling.
Dr Davis : Oh you are Spiderman
Peter Parker : (Interrupts Dr Davis) In my
dream... Actually, it's not
even my dream. It's a friend
of mine's dream.
Dr Davis : Oh somebody else's dream.
What about this friend?
Why does he climb these
walls? What does he think
of himself?
Peter parker: hat's the problem, he doesn't
know what to think.
Dr Davis : Kind of makes you mad not to
know who you are? Your
soul disappears, nothing is
bad uncertainty. Listen,
maybe you are not supposed
to be Spiderman climbing
those walls? That's why you
keep falling. You'll always
have a choice Peter.
(Motivation)
Peter Parker: (whispers) I have a
choice(Confident)
In the conversation 5 above, it showed
that there were two educational values,
namely: Confident and motivation.
7. Confident
Confidence is a feeling or someone's
belief who can do something well or not.
Not all people have a confidence, it is not
easy to rise a self confidence in our heart
but we must have it to face all things in this
life. In the conversation, we can know that
when Peter Parker tried to have a
confidence in choosing something
important in his life.
8. Motivation
Motivation is the act of giving someone
the reasons to do something. It is also an
influence that causes someone to decide
something. Based on the conversation
between Peter parker and Dr Davis, we can
conclude that motivation was given by Dr
Davis to Peter Parker so it can make Peter
parker has reasons to choose and do
something for his life.
Conversation 6
In Peter's imagination... the conver-
sation between Uncle Ben and Peter Parker
Ben parker: of all the times we talked of
honesty, fairness, justice. A
lot of those times I counted
on you to have the courage,
to take those dreams out
into the world.
Peter Parker: I can't live your dreams
anymore. I want a life of my
own.B

In the conversation 6 showed that there
was only one educational value. It was
responsibility.
9. Responsibility
Responsibility is the required condition
where the person bears everything what
people have done and also who they are in
social life. It means that people need to be
ready for all the consequences and risks
which have been carried out. Peter Parker
with who has great power, makes him have
have big responsibility. It showed that
everything what he or she has done and
who he or she is in social life, they will
think the consequences before doing
something right or wrong.
Conversation 7
Spiderman is unable to stop the reactor,
so he turns to the only person who can help
him
Spiderman : Doctor Octavius!
Doc Ock frowns puzzledy, He recogni-
zes that voice and as if to confirm it,
Spiderman removes his mask and reveals
his identity
Spiderman : Look at what's happening!
We have to stop it!
Doc Ock : I can't stop it... I won't!
He clamps a tentacle on Peter's neck and
glares at him
Spiderman : You once spoke to me about
intelligence... You said it
was a gift to be used for the
greater good..

Dr Ock : A privilage..
Spiderman : These things have turned you
into something else.. don't
listen to them...
Dr Ock : It was my dream..
Spiderman : Sometimes... to do what's
right... we must be steady..
and give up the things we
desire the most... even our
dreams..
Dr Ock : You're right
A piece of wreckage gets sucked into
the machine. Outside several cars are
pulled towards the vortex.
Spiderman: Now... tell me how to stop it!
Dr Ock : It can't be stopped. It's self
sustaining now. Unless ... the
river. I'll do it.. (Sacrifice)
The writer found one educational value
based on the conversation 7, it was
sacrifice:
10. Sacrifice
As we know that sacrifice is the action
of giving up something that is valuable to
you in order to help someone else. It is like
what Dr Ock did in a movie, he tried to
forget his big dream and also sacrificed
himself to help many people. Based on the
conversation between Dr Ock and
Spiderman, we can conclude that the
greatest sacrifice is when you sacrifice
your own happiness for the sake of
someone else.
CONCLUSION
After the writer analyzed the story of
Spiderman 2 movie by using descriptive
method, she found that there were ten
educational values. Those were support,
optimist, bravery, never give up, respect,
care, confident, motivation, responsibility,
and sacrifice. Based on the educational
values in Spiderman 2 movie, we can
conclude that it taught us about positive
things in our life.
