6 a There are 7 jobs, each of which has to go through the machines A and B
in the order AB. Processing times in hours are given as
Job 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
Machine A 3 12 15 6 10 11 9 L4 CO3 [6 M]
Machine B 8 10 10 6 12 1 3
Determine a sequence of these jobs that will minimize the total elapsed
time T. Also find T and idle time for machines A and B.
b A T.V repairman repair the sets in the order in which they arrive and
expects that the time required to repair a set has an Exponential
Distribution with mean 30mins. The sets arrive in a Poisson fashion at an
L4 CO3 [6 M]
average rate of 10/8 hrs a day. (a) What is the expected idle time / day for
the repairman? b) How many TV sets will be there waiting for the
repair?

8 Given an average arrival rate of 20 per hour; it is better for a customer to
get on service, at a single channel with mean service that of 22 customers
a or at one of the two channels in parallel with mean. Service rate of 11 L1 CO4 [8M]

9 a A contractor has to supply 10,000 bearings per day to an automobile L4 CO4 [6M]
manufacturer. He finds that when he starts production run, he can
produce 25,000 bearings per day. The cost of holding a bearing in stock
for a year is Rs. 2 and the setup cost of a production run is Rs. 180. How
frequently should production run be made? Also find production run time
and total variable cost? Assume 300 days in the year.
