Bacterial shapes and Arrangements.

Presented by

Bacterial shapes.
There are three basic shapes of
bacteria: coccus, bacillus, and
spirilla.
(i)Coccus or cocci are oval, round or
spherical shaped bacteria.
(ii) Bacillus or bacillum are
elongated rod-shaped bacteria.
(iii) Spirilla or spirillum are
curved rod shaped bacteria.

Bacterial Arrangements.
1. Coccus:
Diplo coccus:Cells divided in one plane
and remain attached in pair. eg.-
Neisseria gonorrhoea.
Strepto coccus:Cells divided in one
plane and make chain of cells. eg.-
Streptococcus pyogenes.
Tetra coccus:Cells divided in threCells
divided in two planes and form a cluster of
four cells. eg.- pediococcus cerevisiaee
Staphyl coccus:Cells divided in three
planes, in an irregular pattern producing
bunches of cocci(like grapes) eg.-
Staphylococcus aureus.
Sarcina:Cells divided in three planes in
a regular pattern. eg.- Sarcina
ventriculli.
2. Bacilli:
Monobacilli:Single elongated rod
shaped cell. eg.- Escherichia coli.
Diplobacilli:After division cells remain
attached and appear in pair form.
eg.- Acinetobacter sp.
Streptobacilli:After division, cells
remain attached and form chain. eg.-
Bacillus subtilis.
3. Other forms:
Palisade:Cells are arranged in a side by
side sequence to form sticklike structure.
eg.- corynebacterium diptheriae.
Thank you.
