The cocci are spherical or oval bacteria having one of several distinct arrangements

Arrangement of cocci bacteria.

Coccus - single spherical cells

Diplococcus - two spherical cells

Tetrad - a square of four cells

Sarcina - a cube of eight cells
1. Division in one plane produces either a diplococcus or streptococcus arrangement.

diplococcus: cocci arranged in pairs

Eg:Streptococcus pneumoniae

streptococcus: cocci arranged in chains

2. Division in two planes produces a tetrad arrangement

Eg. micrococcus

3. Division in three planes produces a sarcina arrangement

sarcina: cocci in arranged cubes of 8

4. Division in random planes produces a staphylococcus arrangement.

Eg. staphylococcus: cocci arranged in irregular, often grape-like clusters

Strepotococcus - long chain of spherical cells
Staphylococcus - grape like clusters of spherical
cells

Bacillus - single rod shaped cells Coccobacillus - rod shaped but short and wide
enough to look spherical
Vibrios - curved rods
Streptobaccilus - chains of rod-shaped bacteria

Spirillum - helical shaped but rigid Spirochete - helical shaped but flexible
Palisades - loose arrangements along the long
edge of the rod

Pleomorphic - heliobacter is both a curved rod

and a coccoid shape

Filamentous
There is also a genus, Stella, that is star shaped
Streptococcus sps
