BACTERIAL MORPHOLOGY

BACTERIA
- Smallest cellular microbe
- Unicellular
- Prokaryotic

Size : 0.2 - 2 microns in diameter

: 2 - 8 microns in length

Shape: monomorphic - single shape

: pleomorphic - more than 1 shape
: cocci, bacilli, spirals

Cocci
- Greek "koccus" - spherical shaped
a) Diplococci
- cocci in pairs
Ex. Streptococcus pneumoniae
Neisseria gonnorhoeae
b) Streptococci
- Cocci in “chains”
- Except Streptococcus pneumonia
c) Staphylococci
- “grape-like” clusters
Ex. Staphylococcus spp.
d) Tetrad
- Cocci in FOURS
e) Sarcinae
- Cocci in cubical packets
Ex. AIDS

Bacilli
- Rod shaped
- Slender
- Rectangular-like
- Club-like
Arrangements:
 Single bacillus
 Diplobacilli – bacilli in pairs
 Streptobacilli – bacilli in chains
 Chinese Letter Arrangement
- cuneiform/ x, y, v, l
- caused by snapping during cell division
 Palisade
- "Picket Fence" / "Cigar packet"
- side by side each other
- slipping of cells during binary fission

* Coccobacilli
- intermediate between cocci & bacilli
- short & stump bacilli
Ex. E. coli

Spirals
- coiling / helical shape
- comma shaped

*Vibrio
- Comma shaped
- Still considered as bacilli
ex: Vibrio cholera
* Spirochete
- Flexible helical/ coiling bacteria
* Spirillum
- Rigid helical bacteria
- Shaped like corkscrew
