Course Description:
This multidisciplinary five credit-hour module provides a comprehensive and integrated
coverage of anatomy, histology, physiology, embryology, pathophysiology, microbiology,
biochemistry and pharmacology relating to the respiratory system is discussed in an integrated
manner. The course includes lectures, practical sessions, small group discussion and clinically
oriented seminars will be part of this module to enhance self-directed learning.

General Objectives
Aim 1: Identify and describe the anatomical and histological appearance of different parts of the
respiratory system and their relations to physiological functions of the system.

Aim 2: Define the most common types of respiratory diseases and their treatment (Asthma,
COPD, Respiratory infections, respiratory tumours)

Intended learning outcomes of the course (ILOs)

common congenital abnormalities can take place.
A4- Describe and understand the physiology of respiratory system (inhale, exhale processes
and acid base balance).
A5- Describe normal bacteria reside the respiratory system (normal flora). Recognition and
characterization of microorganisms that cause infection of the respiratory system, their
pathogenicity and methods of identification.
underlying behavior, motivation, and emotions.

respiratory
System.

C1- Determine and choose of what clinical laboratory tests must be done, and other clinical
investigations include radiography of suspected diseased tissue.
C2- Interpret and analyse microbiology lab results and other laboratories data.

D. General and Transferable Skills

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
D1- Respect superiors, colleagues and any other members of the health profession.
D2- Communicate ideas and arguments effectively.

Assessment Plan

A) Assessment Methods

Formative Assessment
It is a part of learning process and is not included in the module allocated marks. The goal of
a formative assessment is to monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that can
help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work. It also
helps faculty recognize where students are struggling and address problems immediately and
can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their
learning.
- Quizzes
- Draw a concept map in class to represent their understanding of a topic
- Submit one or two sentences identifying the main point of a lecture
- One-minute papers on a specific subject matter
- Lesson exit tickets to summarize what students have learnt

Summative Assessment including

- MCQs, extended matching, short answer questions and case scenarios (Assessment of
knowledge and understanding)
- Objective Structured Practical Exam – OSPE (Assessment of knowledge, understanding and
general skills)
