The students are expected to be able:

Direction. Read the nursing note below and get some useful informations regarding giving an injection.
Then, answer the following questions.
NURSING NOTE
Drugs administered by the intramuscular (IM) route are deposited into vascular muscle
tissue, which allows for rapid absorption into the circulation (Dougherty and Lister, 2015;
Ogston-Tuck, 2014).
Questions:
1. What do IM and IV stand for?
2. Why do nurses inject drugs into patient’s vascular muscle tissue?
3. What complications may occur due to poorly performed IM injection?
4. How to reduce patient’s pain caused by injection technique?

injection to the patient.
4. Position the patient so the muscles are relaxed.
5. Insert and remove the needle smoothly and quickly.
6. Hold the syringe steady during the procedure.
7. Inject medication slowly but smoothly.
