GIVING INJECTION

Instructional objectives
The students are expected to be able to:

 act out a conversation and practice of giving injection to the patients

NURSING NOTE
Drugs administered by the intramuscular (IM) route are deposited into vascular muscle
tissue, which allows for rapid absorption into the circulation (Dougherty and Lister, 2015;
Ogston-Tuck, 2014).

Complications of poorly performed IM injection include:

Pain, bleeding, abscess formation, cellulitis, muscle fibrosis, injuries to nerves and blood
vessels (Small, 2004), inadvertent intravenous (IV) access.

How to reduce pain caused by injection technique

1. Use the correct technique
2. Rotate injection site to prevent indurations or abscesses
3. Explain the benefits of the injection to the patient
