RESUME MODULE 12 : GIVING INJECTION

Giving an injection is a sure thing for us as a nurses. In this material we will learn how
to use the procedure and give instructions to patients when giving injections. The benefit of
giving injection is that the drug can absorbed by the body qickly. There are several
expressions that you can use when you are going to give an injection :

Explaining the procedure :

a. Its time for me …


b. I just want …
c. I am going …
d. I would like …
e. I need …

To give an injection
To give an injection into your buttocks
To give an injection into your (upper) arms

For example :
a. Excusme sir, now iam going to give an injection
b. Sir, I would like to give an injection into your buttocks

And here are some vocabulary that you can learn :

 Syringe : alat suntik


 Couch : tempat tidur untuk memeriksa pasien
 Roll : gulungan, menggulung (bandages)
 Sleeve : lengan baju
 Buttock : pantat (bokong)
 Vein : pembuluh darah vena
 Clench : mencengkram
 Fist : kepalan tangan
 Jab : tusukan (dengan jarum) , pukulan
 Needle : jarum
 Pants : celana
 Gallstone : batu empedu

Giving the injection can make some patients feel anxious or even afraid. That's why
when we give an instructions, we are advised to use sentences that can calm the patient.
Examples of instructions that we can say when giving injection :

Sit down
Lie face down
Lie on your tummy
Lie with face downwards
Roll up your sleeve
Give me your right/left hand
Lower your pants down

Example :
 Would you sit down, please?

You can also use the expression of caution during implementation so that the patient
can prepare himself. Example :

Cautionary expression :

 This will give … a little pain


 You may feel … a bit uncomfortable
 You’ll feel … a little bit uncomfortable

Example :
 Don’t worry, it just gives a little pain
 You may feel a little pain

 Don’t move while iam doing the injection


 Don’t be stiff. Flex your buttock, please

This is an example of a conversation between the nurse and the patient when giving the
injection

Nurse : good morning, mrs. Ageng.

Patient : morning nurse.

Nurse : according to our schedule yesterday, today I would like to give an injection into
your upper arms. This drug is useful for relieving nausea.

Patient : ok nurse.

Nurse : Would you sit down, please?

Patient : sure.

Nurse : now, I want you to roll up your sleeve.

Patient : yes nurse.

Nurse : Don’t move while iam doing the injection. And don’t worry, it just gives a little
pain.

Good, done. How do you feel?


Patient : I feel a little pain but its ok.

Nurse : OK, this afternoon I'll be back to take your temperature. do you have anything to
ask?

Patient : no nurse.

Nurse : ok thanks for your attention. Get well soon.

Patient : thanks nurse.

Nurse : yes, my pleasure.
