NURSING NOTE
Taking blood samples and other biological specimens, such as sputum or
phlegm, urine, and feces, is crucial to the understanding, prevention, and treatment
of disease. However, from the client’s perspective, it can also be painful, unnerving,
frightening, and inconvenient.
The samples above are those that are naturally eliminated from the body.
The client should be able to collect these samples themselves. However, young
children or clients with physical disabilities may need assistance from nurses.
These samples are usually painless to collect, but can sometimes be
awkward or unpleasant for the client because they involve elimination of bodily
wastes and involve body parts and functions people prefer to keep private. In
those cases, nurses can play an important role in helping them to feel at ease
