Abstract*

The importance of tracking and reporting


Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) in order to
prevent future incidents and improve patient
safety is well established in the literature. The
European Medicines Agency and the National
Medicines Authority in Portugal are responsible
for overseeing medication safety through
pharmacovigilance. The SIRAI application
(Information System for Adverse Reactions and
Incidents) has been implemented to support
these efforts at a local level. The main aim of
this work is to contribute to the development of a
data quality system for the SIRAI application by
establishing checking rules for data validation in
order to improve data quality. Following a
detailed analysis of the system description and
using a sample dataset, we developed a set of
data validation rules and defined a scoring
system to rate each record and the overall
