Introduction:

Introduce yourself and teammate. Both go over experience in and out of the department as a
supervisor.

Objective:
Overview is designed to just open the topic of Leadership Style and why it is important to
determine what kind of leader you are.

Narrative:

If you punch in “leadership concepts” into your web search engine, how many hits do you think
will come up? Over 440,000 hits and each one is pretty unique. Why do you think there are so many hits?

If you punch in “leadership styles” into your web search engine, how many hits do you think will
come up? Almost 200,000 hits come up and each is pretty much unique.

So this little exercise shows that there are as many different ideas on how to become a leader, as
well as what makes a good leader. Are Presidents good leaders? Are CEO’s good leaders? Are Police
Officers good leaders? Are school teachers’ good leaders?

I do not think a job position/title or current position in an organization inherently makes one a
good leader. On the same, it does not eliminate them either. Are you born a good leader? History could
lend some credence to that theory, Alexander, Ghingus Khan, Attila the Hun, Napoleon, etc. Again, I do
not think you are born a leader or a birth status makes you a good leader.

Doctor Mary Bast, wrote a book titled, “Out of the Box Coaching and Breakthrough with the
Enneagram.” No, it is not a good book because of the long title. She bases a concept that good leaders are
made by them finding out their strengths and weaknesses. She uses an nine level Enneagram to help
managers determine their strengths and weakness. She states that no level is any better than another level
in the development of a leader. It just outlines some basic inherent qualities they may have: What they
have to work with.

She states that by finding this out, an individual can then determine who they are and what drives
them. They can use this information to develop their strengths and work at overcoming their deficiencies.

I only highlight this concept, due to the concept she brings to the table. We will be the leaders that
we allow ourselves to become. Your leadership level will be determined only by your willingness to look
inside yourself, address all your character traits, and then start a long term journey into development of
these traits into a Leader. Your success will be based on your willingness to change, adjust, and over
come. It is an ongoing process.

Conclusion:

I know this is a broad view of the ideas. I can not give you the answer. I can tell you my journey
and what it took to bring me to this point and what has worked for me. This is not what will necessarily
work for you. It is an individual process. I will tell you that it is not a journey you are or have to be alone
in. Rely on each other and those who have come before. Remember, it is not a sole idea but a
conglomeration of ideas, thoughts, experiences and examples that we fit into our traits, that develop our
personal leadership abilities.

Good luck and keep an OPEN MIND!!
