Present Simple and Present Continuous


When we want to use the present, we need to decide whether we are
describing something that is habitual (present simple) or something that is
happening at this moment and so is temporary (present continuous).
Look at these examples and see the difference.
He usually wears shorts (habitual), but today he's wearing jeans. (temporary, just
today).
Every day they play football after school (habitual), but today they are playing
basketball. (temporary, just now).
Use present simple or present continuous.

Form
* We make the past simple of regular verbs with the suffix -ed.
They played football yesterday.
* To make the negative we put the auxiliary verb didn't(the short form isdidn't)
before the main verb in its root form. The main verb does NOT have the
suffix –ed in the negative.
He didn't watch TV last night.
* In shortanswers, we use the personal pronoun and did or didn't. We do not
repeat the main verb.
Did you like the film?
Yes,I did./ No,I didn't.

Spelling rules
* With verbs ending in –e, we only add –din the past simple positive.

* With verbs ending in a consonant end –y, the y goes and we add –ied.

* With verbs ending in a vowel and –y, we add –ed as usual

* With single-syllable verbs ending in a vowel and a consonant, we double the
consonant and add –ed.

Use
We use the Past Simple
* to talk about something that happened at a specific time in the past. We can answer a
question asking when the action happened.

* to talk about a series of actions, one after the other.
