Geophysical applications to geothermal energy

Geothermal energy is a renewable resource that has the
potential to provide a significant portion of baseload
energy in many regions around the globe. Electric
power generation from hydrothermal and geopressured
geothermal systems has been successful worldwide for a few
decades. Direct use of shallow geothermal energy can address
present needs for heating and cooling of buildings or hot water
generation. Other systems, such as permeable strata, magmatic, and
enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) that have the promise of much

larger resources, are not well understood and currently have difficulty (Source: Wikimedia Commons, public domain)
producing energy on an economically attractive scale.
As geothermal exploration and development extends to less understood resources and regions, targets carry higher
risks and the demands placed on geophysical methods increase. Advances in geophysical technologies enable
better subsurface images and more accurate conceptual models that respect and remain consistent with all known
information.
This special section of Geophysics aims to present a collection of technical articles that demonstrate the state of the
art and the challenges in geophysical applications to geothermal exploration and production.
We welcome studies on geophysical data acquisition and interpretation,
as well as case histories that illustrate the role and value of geophysics
in geothermal resource exploration and development. Accordingly, we
invite the submission of papers on the following topics:
• Geophysical methods for geothermal resource exploration
• Methods and applications for monitoring developed geothermal fields
• Decarbonizing existing oil-and-gas field via EGS and direct use
• Integrated inversion with multiple geophysical methods
• Integrated interpretation with geology, temperature, geochemistry,
and uncertainty estimation

Manuscripts must be uploaded using the Geophysics online submission system and will go through the standard
Geophysics review process, which includes a double-anonymous peer review by at least three reviewers. When
uploading manuscripts, please select Geophysical applications to geothermal energy as the manuscript type.

THE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE PROCESSED ACCORDING TO THE FOLLOWING TIMELINE:

Manuscript submission deadline: 1 August 2022
Peer review complete: 2 February 2023
Publication of issue: May–June 2023
