also known as green construction and sustainable
building

WHAT IS GREEN refers to both a structure and the application of processes

BUILDING? that are environmentally responsible and resource-efficient
throughout a building's cycle

is the practice of adopting measures that promote resource

management efficiency and site sustainability while
minimizing the negative impact of human health and the
environment
WHY GREEN BUILDINGS?

TOWARDS A SUBSTANTIAL TOWARDS A PROGRESSIVE TOWARDS A PRODUCTIVE

ENVIRONMENT ECONOMY SOCIETY
BENEFITS OF  EFFICIENT USE OF ENERGY AND OTHER RESOURCES

GREEN REDUCED WASTAGE OF WATER

BUILDINGS
IMPROVED AIR QUALITY

REDUCED OPERATING COST

. IMPROVED OCCUPANT PRODUCTIVITY

IMPROVED OCCUPANT HEALTH AND COMFORT

GREEN BUILDING REQUIREMENTS

1 Energy Efficiency 4 Solid Waste Management

2 Water Efficiency 5 Site Sustainability

3 Material Sustainability 6 Indoor Environmental Quality

ENERGY EFFICIENCY
BUILDING ENVELOPE

1. AIR TIGHTNESS AND MOISTURE PROTECTION

eliminate unwanted infiltration and humidity with specific details to ensure that air tightness is maximized
complete gaskets, weather-stripping, door bottom sweeps and seals within and around window and door
assembles
buildings and spaces without air conditioning systems are exempt

2. GLASS PROPERTIES

reduce the amount of glazing with respect to the wall in order to reduce internal heat gains
Window Wall Ratio (WWR) should be balanced with the amount of daylight coming through the glazed area
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
NATURAL VENTILATION

operable windows or balcony door shall be provided in regularly occupied spaces

all operable windows shall be provided with safety features for protection against strong winds, water penetration,
and protection for building occupants including child safety and security

BUILDING ENVELOPE COLOR

light-colored building enevelopes can reduce heat transfer from the outside to the inside of the building
by having surfaces with high Solar Reflectance Index (SRI)

building roof surfaces shall either be colored white or have a minimum SRI of 70

BUILDING
ENVELOPE COLOR
ROOF INSULATION
should reduce heat gain in the building through reducing
the buildings' thermal resistance value of atleast R-8
ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS
DAYLIGHT PROVISIONS OTHERS

Building interior perimeter zone exposed to Elevators and Escalators/Moving Ramps/

generally not require artificial lighting during the Walkways
day (e.g. using photoelectric sensors) Overhead or Elevated Water Storage
Water Fixtures
WATER usage of water fixtures to use less water
EFFICIENCY
Rainwater Harvesting
rainwater from roofs and hardscape must be collected

Water Recycling
recycled water from Sewage Treatment Plants (STP)
shall be reused for non-potable purposes
SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT
Materials Recovery Facility

SITE SUSTAINABILITY
Site Preparation and Earthworks
Open Space Utilization
INDOOR ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY

Minimum Fresh Air Rates

Designated Smoking Areas
if smoking is allowed indoors, it shall be well-
partitioned from the rest of the indoor areas
shall be equipped with adequate exhaust
system, and shall directly vent out to the
outside of the building and away from any
building opening or air intakes
door and windows of enclosed smoking area
shall always be closed and well-sealed
EXAMPLES OF GREEN BUILDINGS

Designed by Benjamin Garcia Saxe in Guanacaste, Costa Rica

EXAMPLES OF GREEN BUILDINGS

Green Lighthouse is Denmark’s first CO2-neutral building and is home to the University of Copenhagen’s Faculty of Science, achieved with a holistic design approach that
optimized energy efficiency.

GREEN BUILDINGS IN THE PROJECT DEVELOPMENT CYCLE

PRE-CONSTRUCTION CONSTRUCTION OPERATION DECONSRTUCTION

close cooperation of the sourcing and intelligent approach to it would be better if the
contractor, architects, optimization of raw useful life of the building
energy
engineers, and client materials safeguarding water will be extended through
integrative planning and design
construction of viable using materials that are
in accordance to the NBCP and resources
PGBC and flexible structures resilient or can make
minimizing waste
consideration of location and should pursue the rennovations easier
promoting health and
transportation, and sustainable provisions of the

optimization
"Green building is the practice of creating structures and using
processes that are environmentally responsible and resources-
efficient throughout a building's life-cycle from sitting to
design, construction, operation, maintenance, renovation and
deconstruction. The practice expands and complements the
classucal building design concerns of economy, utility,
durability, and comfort. Green building is known as a
sustainable or high performance building."
