Over the past decade environmental, ‘green’ building technologies have enjoyed 8
unprecedented attention from building owners, the general public and design
Q#1 practitioners. As a consequence, today’s architects are under increasing pressure to
position their built work within this context. A convenient and popular method is to
evaluate one’s built work via building rating systems. Pick an apartment or house in
which you have lived in the past for which you have access to annual energy bills for
electricity, gas, oil etc. Estimate the floor area of the living unit and calculate the
energy use intensity of the living unit, overall building energy use per person and
carbon emissions per person. Comment on your findings.

Q#2 Create Your Renewable Energy System Plan keeping the following instruction and 10
evaluation criteria.
Describe your project title
Provide a summary of your energy audit.
Provide a budget for all of your system components.
List all of the components you need to meet your energy demands.
Describe your final system set-up.

Instructions

Your task is to construct a small-scale, off-grid system that can supply enough
energy to power your load. To complete this, describe your system and then review
three systems submitted by your peers. To successfully complete , you will need to

 Complete an energy audit to determine the kilowatt hours necessary to run all
of your appliances or devices (your load)
 Build a realistic budget for system components
 List all of the components you will need to charge enough batteries to provide
enough power to your load
 Describe your final system set-up

Criteria:

 A summary of the kilowatt hours necessary to run your load (the results of
your energy audit)
 A realistic budget for system components
 A list of all of the components you will need to charge enough batteries to
provide enough power to your load
 A description of your final system set-up
Q#3 Under the sustainable smart grid paradigm, the smart house with its home energy 7
management system (HEMS) plays an important role to improve the efficiency,
economics, reliability, and energy conservation for distribution systems. Explain the
energy scheduling strategies in smart houses. Also, differentiate between price-based
and incentive-based demand response.
Q#4 Do you think China Pakistan economic corridor (CPEC) project could be one of the 5
sustainable solutions to solve the energy crisis in the country? List the main
features of CPEC in terms of the socio-techno-economic triangle.

Q#5 You are ‘’Managing Director’’ of a multinational company. Name the company and 5
prepare a document of ‘’Energy Management Policy of the company’’ following the
guidelines of standard energy policy examples discussed in your lecture slides.

Q#6 Papermaking is an energy intensive process. Flow charts are schematic 5

representation of the production process, involving various input resources,
conversion steps and output and recycle streams. The identification and drawing up
a unit operation are prerequisite for energy balance. Draw a typical process flow
diagram (with electrical and thermal energy) for an integrated waste paper industry
and analyze the energy usage and losses of each utility.
Q#7 The energy policy of Pakistan is formulated and determined by the federal, 10
provincial, and local institutional entities in Pakistan, which address the issues of
energy production, distribution, and consumption of energy. Policy requires the
proper legislation, international treaties, subsidies and incentives to investment,
guidelines for energy conservation, taxation and other public policy techniques.
You are given a task to present i) short term energy policy of Pakistan 2) Mid Term
and 3) Long Term Energy Plan for next 30 years (2020-2050), based on the facts and
resources available in the country.

Further, now the above short , mid and long term energy policy plans are presented
to you and now act as you are energy minister and your role is to comment critically
on each type (at least 3-5 points) and approve or disapprove the energy policy of each
type according to the current scenario in the country.
