GRAMMAR FOCUS 10.

ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS OF MANNER


I. Adjectives:
* Adjectives modifies nouns: Peter is a good guy
* Common endings are: -ive, -ful, -less, -ic, -al, -able, -y
* Adjectives come after some special verbs such as: be, appear, seem, look, smell, sound, feel …..
II. Adverbs of manner:
1. Formation of Adverbs of manner:
Adjectives + -ly = Adverbs
E.g: careful -> carefully quick -> quickly dangerous -> dangerously
* Note:
a. Adjectives ending in “y” change to “ily”: happy-> happily noisy -> noisily
b. Adjectives ending in “-ble” change to “-bly”: possible -> possibly incredible -> incredibly
c. Irregular verbs: lately = recently hard-> hard fast ->
fast
d. Not all words ending in “–ly” are adverbs. These adjectives are: friendly, lively, silly, lovely.
lonely, elderly.
2. Use of Adverbs of manner.
a. Adverbs of manner modify verbs: Jack ran quickly into the station.
b. Adverbs of manner modify adjectives: He is extremely happy at the exam result.
c. Adverbs of manner modify another adverb: My brother plays football particularly well.
d. Adverbs of manner modify a sentence: Surprisingly, he left.
