Laboratory Activity 1

Pre-abattoir handling

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of different pre-slaughter handling techniques on the

welfare of livestock.

Materials:

 A group of chicken
 Pre-slaughter handling
 Thermometer
 Blood pressure monitor

Procedure:

1. Divide the animals into three groups: a control group and two treatment groups.
2. The control group should be handled in a standard manner, which reflects common pre-
slaughter handling practices in the industry.
3. The first treatment group should be handled gently, using low-stress handling techniques,
such as the use of flags or whistles instead of physical force.
4. The second treatment group should be handled with high-stress handling techniques, such
as shouting, prodding, or physical force.
5. Use the equipment to measure the blood pressure, and body temperature of each animal
before and after handling.
6. Record any behavioral observations, such as vocalizations, struggling, or signs of fear or
distress.
7. Analyze the data to determine if there are any significant differences in the physiological
and behavioral responses of the animals to the different handling techniques.
