FRANCOIS MARIE AROUET (AKA VOLTAIRE)Born Francois Marie Arouet but better known by his pen name, Voltaire was a prolific essayist and brilliant playwright, with over 14,000 known letters and over 2,000 books and pamphlets. A key figure of the European Age of Enlightenment, Voltaire considered himself a Deist - that God must exist to create our complex world and control morals, but he did not believe in the God of the Bible. He was attacked for most of his life yet it is hard to find a portrait of him in which he is not smiling. As a dramatist, Voltaire was not great; as the standard bearer of intellectual freedom, his influence is immeasurable.DW
