General Introduction of Cold-rolled Electrical Steel

At present, WISCO has a 1.70 million tons

annual capacity on cold-rolled electrical steel,
among which oriented electrical steel occupies
0.40 million (including 0.17 million tons of
high permeability grain-oriented steel, 0.23
million tons of conventional oriented electrical
steel), 1.30 million tons of non-oriented
electrical steel.
Characteristics of Cold-rolled Electrical Steel

ƒ Magnetic Property:
Low core loss and high permeability,
especially for HIB

ƒ Shape : Transverse and

longitudinal thickness differences
are small. The lamination or
stacking factors are remarkably
good.
ƒ Insulation Coating
A variety of surface insulations are available to choose. The smooth, tightly adherent
coating which has passed the certification of REACH and RoHs provides high
levels of insulation resistance, processability, as well as protection against high
temperature and rusting.

ƒ Good Processing Performance

The material is suitable for cut and/or punch. The users ensuring the accurate working
and correct tools are able to acquire laminations with good geometrical properties
after stamping.

ƒ Surface Condition
The surfaces shall be smooth and clean. There are no defects which will affect the
further use of the supplied materials, such as rusts, roller marks, holes, double skin,
fold marks, blisters, laminations, etc.

ƒ Cautions for Use of Cold-rolled Electrical Steel
The punching, cutting and bending process of cold-rolled electrical steel strips
(sheets) will cause mechanical stress and strain, which will lead to the deterioration
of magnetism. The degree of deterioration increases with narrowing of the punching
width. For example, when the punching width of the core decreases from 30mm to 3
mm, the specific total loss will increase by about 40%. Therefore, the relief
annealing must be used for small motor cores, micro-motor cores and cold-rolled
oriented electrical steel strips (sheets) after being punched and bended so as to
relieve mechanical stress and strain and to restore the original magnetism of the
material.
ƒ Here is an instruction of relief annealing
1. Annealing Temperature:
The annealing temperature should not be too high and is limited to the temperature that will be
able to restore the original level of magnetism. High temperature annealing, of course, can further
improve the magnetism, but will also affect the insulation coating and cause lamination bonding.
Oriented electrical steel strips (sheets) generally applies to 800 ± 10 ℃, while non-oriented
electrical steel strips (sheets) applies to 700 ~ 750 ℃.
2. Annealing Time:
The annealing time is the holding time after the furnace temperature achieves the set temperature.
Generally it is the time required for the core to heat evenly through. The actual annealing time
depends on the way of annealing, the furnace type, the batch, the charging way and the core size. In
order to prevent the deformation of lamination due to thermal stress during heating and cooling
process, the heating rate and cooling rate must be properly controlled. The best way of heating is to
heat from the laminated side. The cooling rate depends on the batch. The cooling rate should be
lower than 30 ℃ / hour for the batch within a few tons. If the batch is larger, the cooling rate should
be lower.
3. Annealing Atmosphere
The annealing atmosphere applied should not cause oxidation and carburization of lamination,
as well as significant deterioration of insulation coating of electrical steel strips (sheets) surface.
In order not to cause oxidation of lamination, it is better to apply hydro nitrogen mixed gas with
2~10% hydrogen. The protective atmosphere dew point generally should be below 0 ℃.
4. To prevent carburization and oxidation
As the carbon content of our cold-rolled electrical steel strips (sheets) is less than 0.025%, in
order to prevent deterioration of magnetism, we must take strict precautions against carburization
during relief annealing.
The furnace materials, such as the furnace cover,
the floor should use low-carbon steel. The residual
oil on lamination surface should be cleared before
the annealing. Preventing oxidation of lamination is
an important measure to relieve stress. In addition
to the proper annealing atmosphere, it is also
important to make sure that the furnace is sealed in
good condition and nitrogen or other inert gas is
inlet for cleaning before heating.
Oriented Electrical Steel
ƒ Scope of Application
Oriented electrical steel is generally classified as conventional oriented electrical steel and
high permeability oriented electrical steel. It is widely used in transformers, large-scale
generators and other equipment cores. Compared with general oriented electrical steel, high
permeability oriented electrical steel has a higher permeability, a lower hysteresis loss,
a lower hysteresis expansion and a lower sensitivity of assembly stress.
