Alive with School Spirit

What a great time to be named president of Cleveland Central Catholic! Just weeks into this journey, and I am filled with hope and great excitement about the future. As I write my first open letter to the Central Catholic community, I am amazed by the transformation that has taken place at our school. What I experienced so far has easily surpassed all of my expectations. This is a school that remains vibrant in the city and one that is clearly on the rise. Central Catholic is alive with school spirit! I met a strong team of caring diocesan and school administrators who are determined to ensure our students benefit from a Catholic education in an environment that is clean, safe and orderly. I observed several classes where devoted teachers and eager students were engaged in meaningful ways that challenge young minds and hearts to be successful. I spent time listening to board members and other friends of the school, who understand the important role that Central Catholic plays in our neighborhood, city and diocese. Most importantly, I enjoyed the Central Catholic students! In just one short week, I met student leaders, learned that a remarkable 88% of Central Catholic students are college bound, spoke with them about their dreams and aspirations, watched them interact with each other in caring and respectful ways and finally celebrated a wonderful Homecoming Weekend with them. I am impressed with them! It is obvious to me that Central Catholic provides our students with a real family atmosphere. During the Ironmens Homecoming football victory, the stands in the sparkling new Stefanski Stadium were filled with energy and fans of all ages. It is exciting to see all kinds of good people come together to support our students. God has blessed Cleveland Central Catholic with many friends and benefactors who support our mission and have given generously to it. On behalf of the entire CCC family, I wish to again thank those who have done so much to make wonderful things happen. The many partnerships that have been forged have improved our campus and neighborhood and our school community! God bless your generosity. As we begin the next chapter in the story that is Cleveland Central Catholic, I invite you make a commitment to be part of our success. We will work together to create a shared vision for how to sustain Central Catholics tremendous momentum. I look forward to serving the Central Catholic community as we invite your input and welcome your support.

A Message from the Board Chair

Its a Great Day!

Introducing Advisory Board Chairperson Frank Zombek Its an honor to chair such a talented, dedicated, and generous board and to succeed
Terry Brizz, who still contributes so much to the school. I have been involved with Central Catholic for a number of years through committees and board service.

Often, excitement is just a feeling. But here, you can see and touch it our new football field, Ben S. Stefanski II Stadium the result of a remarkable partnership among Central Catholic, Third Federal Savings and Loan, the City of Cleveland, the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, Slavic Village Development, and a generous grant from the NFL with the support of the Cleveland Browns. The dedication on September 21 was a grand occasion. Dignitaries, alumni, family, friends, and late summer sunshine highlighted the day. You could feel the pride.

I am pleased to introduce the new president of Central Catholic, Mr. Leo Hyland. Ms. Margaret Lyons, Secretary for Education/Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese of Cleveland, said, Mr. Hyland has inspired confidence in the Central Catholic Board members who were part of the search committee, and we are grateful that he is bringing his comprehensive background to further the wonderful work that is being done at Cleveland Central Catholic. Mr. Hyland has over 15 years of marketing and fundraising experience, primarily in education. In the words of Sister Allison Marie, as she closed the stadium dedication, Its a great day to be an Ironman!

2010-2011 Cleveland Central Catholic

Prom Dress Gifts Help Central Catholic Girls

Drive led by newest advisory board member, Allyn Davies

Allyn led a drive by asking friends to help collect gently used prom
and formal dresses for students at Cleveland Central Catholic. Allyn may be new to Central Catholic but she is not new to a philosophy of giving back. Before Allyn joined CCCs advisory board, she sponsored a nursing scholarship at CCC and donated a laptop for college to Sharese Allen, who graduated in June and is attending Bowling Green for nursing. In the summer, Allyn and her husband John took Sharese to lunch and shared with her their work collecting prom dresses. Sharese was energized and reinforced the need, telling stories of friends who were unable to attend because they didnt have dresses. Before leaving for college, Sharese donated her own prom dress plus several others to the prom dress collection effort.
Allyn Davies holds up a prom dress that will be given to students. More than 50 were collected.

If you would like to know more about donating prom dresses, contact Michele Scoccola in the Development Office.

Who is Packing Your Parachute?

At a recent scholarship luncheon, Margaret Lyons, superintendent of diocesan schools, told the story of Charles Plumb, a Vietnam veteran who was a prisoner of war for six years after his plane was shot down. Many years later, a man came up to him in a restaurant and said, Youre Plumb. You flew jet fighters in Vietnam from the Kitty Hawk. You were shot down. Plumb asked the man how he knew that and the man simply said, I packed your parachute. The man shook his hand and said, I guess the parachute worked!
That night, Plumb thought about the man and reflected on the many hours he must have spent carefully packing parachutes for men he did not know. The man, whom Plumb had not remembered, had packed his parachute at one of the most critical points in his life.

SNAPSHOT

The question then is, Who is packing my parachute? What persons whom I might not even know will impact my future? As I reflect on this question, it makes me think about Cleveland Central Catholic. Who is packing our students parachutes?

The question then is, Who is packing my parachute? What persons whom I might not even know will impact my future? Reflecting on this question, it makes me think about Central Catholic. Who is packing our students parachutes?

The obvious answers include their parents, guardians, relatives, pastors, principals, teachers, staff, and friends everyone who cares about them and wants them to succeed. But who are the unknown persons? Supporters of Cleveland Central Catholic, in many ways, are anonymous parachute packers. Through your generosity, students who cannot afford a Catholic education are prepared for life at Cleveland Central Catholic. The education our students receive is the ticket to their future and the future of Cleveland. Catholic education in the United States began as a means of preserving the faith and serving the underserved. Today, those who were educated in Catholic schools have become leaders in our society. The education we provide our students will make them the leaders of tomorrow 21st Century leaders who will be required to make decisions for the betterment of society. May our good God bless you today and each day as you pack our students parachutes.

Revivals Reflect Old & New, Pieces & Parts of CCC

Lots of Links Form Central Catholic Family
By Ellen Howard Theres a new fence on the edge of the new athletic field
where it adjoins the parking lot for the St. Stans Social Center. Chain link fences have a lot of compartments, and each is a window, framing a view of the field. A few years ago, a view through the old chain link fence showed work on the field just beginning. At the other end of the same block, at East 67th and Baxter, a new walkway leads from the atrium door to the new field. By chance, Fred Badar, at a supervisory post in his 40th year at Central, met Jerry Fasko 65 OLL, taking care of details Like the chain link fence, Central Catholic was by its very inception made up of a lot of pieces and parts, forged into one just by being part of CCC. Just this spring, the production of Big Bad, a play in which Big Bad Wolf of Little Red Riding Hood fame is put on trial, marked the revival of drama after an absence of 7-1/2 years. Having survived the transfer from the old Scranton costume stock, a red dress suited the size and character of Grandma perfectly.

left from the Athletic Hall of Fame induction a week earlier. Recalling how both had coached football in the early days of CCC, when the home field was nowhere near any of the four campuses, Badar suggested that they be the first to be photographed sitting on the new stands, which had just appeared.

Though unknown to most of the audience, this token from the past was more than symbolic it was a real link to another time. In its heyday the Scranton stage channeled the energies of many a At the June 1 Awards Assembly, 2010 graduate Liz Premo merited the Samuel L. Brooks Scholar Award, an honor established to memorialize the revered chemistry and physics teacher who went to the Big Campus in the Sky some 15 years ago. Its been 11 years since a student has been given this distinguished honor, linking Liz to Mr. Brooks and his high standards, and also to the other recipients. Liz excelled at

Centralite, with a play in the fall and a musical in the spring. Following the path to a career in entertainment, producer Paul Barrosse 76 responded to the revival of dramatic production at Central. For me, working in the theatre bred personal confidence, helped me to be at ease in public situations, made me a better speaker, and fostered a love of drama, comedy and the English language that have enriched my life. And, while I've made my living in the entertainment field, I would still have received all of these blessings and benefits from my high school theatre experience even if I'd never stepped on a stage as a professional actor.

Just days after the dramatic revival, another renewed life from old roots appeared, advertising a summer horticulture class. Someone should figure the years since CCC sponsored the study of horticulture for credit. At one time, the Washington Park Greenhouse was a stop on the intercampus bus route. Linda McClure 65 St. Stans, still a clerk at CCC, lived in nearby Newburgh Heights and rode the school bus home from work! Before that, the study of botany emerged as a focus back at Lourdes, hardly a coincidence since Director Fr. John L. Fiala himself was an accomplished horticulturalist, specializing in irises. The new horticulture class meets on East 67th Street near the new entrance, and tends to the vegetable garden across the street from the school.

many things, from robotics to bowling. Her sister Mary, a rising senior, and her father, also an alumus, are all parishioners at Our Lady of Lourdes, where the Central Catholic Family has its earliest roots. Central, no pun intended, to the very concept of CCC was OLLs Principal Sister Mary Teresita, SND, who worked alongside Fr. Fiala to formulate plans for the

At her Iron Jubilee celebration, her niece and three nephews, all Central grads, were among those honoring her 65 years as a Sister of Notre Dame. Another milestone to be noted: last summer Fr. Neil OConnor marked the 40th year of his priesthood. Among those in attendance: Jane Oblock Hlatky 77, happy to attend St. Columbkille Church where he serves as pastor. To dedicate this field, no less than the bishop, the mayor, representatives of the Cleveland Browns, the principal and the advisory board chair were among the ribbon-cutters, in full view of Third Federal Savings and Loan, the stalwart neighborhood anchor. Fittingly dubbed Ben S. Stefanski II Stadium at Morgana Park, the track and field welcomed the neighborhood kids and teams whose energy will enliven this space and all of Slavic Village. Amid cheers from assembled neighbors, alumni and teachers, the Ironmen spilled onto the field, their new home. More than on any other day, on this day Central Catholic could truly exclaim, Its a great day to be an Ironman!

Athletic Hall of Fame

Hall of Fame Honors Nine

By Ellen Howard Along with the planned ceremony of the third
Athletic Hall of Fame induction on May 2, the unscripted remarks of the 2010 inductees showed the best facets of the CCC family. In brief speeches following their presenters introductions, Centrals newest honorees revealed how they had unwittingly influenced each other back in the day. Jim Cisco Cackowski 60 St. Stans paid homage to Coach Len Janiak, CCCs original athletic director in a class by himself. He taught you respect for the game and for the opponent you played, said Cisco. Jim Stofko 62 OLL was a sophomoreI knew Cisco on the fledgling Crusader football team at Lourdes. Both Jims talked about the game 40-50 years agoand I do remember playing against them, said Mike Bober 62 SJC. Frank Longa 66 SJC remembered his late brother, 2010 inductee Larry Longa 71, on the baseball diamond and in life. He was a reflection of my parents values and his education at St. John Cantius and CCC, said Frank. Skilled at football and baseball, Bob Bernhard 75 recalled how in his freshman year he caught for Larry to prepare for Longas pitching tryout with the Cleveland Indians! Along with Bernhard and Longa, Dennis Gadowski 78, described by Jerry Chase as a naturally talented player, personified Central baseball, during a decade when CCC fielded championship teams. As the 1970s ended, football players started to get our stride, explained Rick Hairston 80, who charmed the audience by listing stats of his teammate, inductee Ricardo Brown 80. A stellar pioneer of Lady Ironmen basketball and softball, Joyce Lockhardt 83 remarked on how participation in high school sports makes (athletes) who they are going to become. Jerry Chase, the last inductee, said that was the best thing about coaching here. It was like a family. We all looked after them. And going back to the quintessential coach, Coach Chase

talked about his mentor Janiak. I learned more from Len than any coach before or since. Vintage photos and dinner catered by Mario Fazios added to the memorable afternoon, the first of its kind in the Ironman Center. To help event chairs Jerry Fasko 65 OLL and John Simon 72, alumni and faculty Moe Brickman 65 OLL, Mary Lou Fasko, Lin Sinclair, Cindy Kinley, Joann Hynes 69 OLL, Lori Meinhardt 58 St. Stans and the family of Tom Fasko 75 provided invaluable assistance.

Cantius Classes Combine for First Annual Get Together

On September 25, 2010 a "Get Together" for classmates from SJC graduating classes 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965 and 1966 was held. Approximately 80 alumni attended. A memorial mass at St. John Cantius Church for deceased alumni was concelebrated by Fr. John Bryk (SJC religious instructor in the 1960s) and Fr. Abbot Christopher (Robert) Schwartz, OSB, '64 SJC. A gathering at Sokolowski's University Inn followed the liturgy. It was a great evening of socializing and fellowship. The group decided to try to make this an annual event for all interested SJC alumni. Anyone interested in being added to the contact list send your information to Jim Boomer '65 SJC at mohawkjim@ windstream.net or call him at (440) 353-3975.
