prepared for the President’s Dinner in

onset of covid meant we had to cancel
it. However, we finally got the chance to
get together and to enjoy a wonderfully
social evening with good food and an
excellent cabaret. I’d like to thank all
those who have sent thank you
messages saying how much they
enjoyed the evening. No-one has yet been able to
discover the source of the quote I used in my
speech, if you know please get in touch! The
quote is:“I prefer the company of happy people
who are believers in magic and of magical people
who are believers in happy.”
Following this
success, I’m looking
forward to the
Picnic, and, of
course, the
Eastbourne
convention in
September when I
can pass over the
Presidency to Oliver
Tabor. I hope that you
have been keeping
an eye on the
Facebook page and
Convention Corner in
the Key Ring to
discover who we
have appearing on
Oliver Tabor the shows and
lecturing in Eastbourne and that you have
registered to attend. If you’ve never been to a
British Ring convention before why not make this
one your first? We can guarantee great magic of
all kinds and the time to meet and make friends
as well as competitions to enter or watch.
The opening up of events has led to a mix of
magic events reappearing on the calendar
together with invitations to attend some
of them. Hopefully we will be able to
accept and enjoy some of these and
report back via these pages. There are
still Zoom events happening too and the
most recent of these I attended online
was to give my magical history talk to
the Zodiac Society. Thanks to Alan
Browne for the invite and if you would
like me to give this talk, (which is an on
screen, PowerPoint, presentation), to
your club, please get in touch.
The talk is suitable for
non-magicians too and
there is no charge for this
as it promotes The British
Ring, but donations are
accepted.
There was still a limited
response to the latest President’s
Challenge, which was to write a four to five
hundred word piece on the three magicians who
have most influenced your magical journey, and I
have decided to carry it over for one more month.
Maybe you need more words to do this, so I’ll up
it to eight hundred words. Hopefully more of you
will have a go at doing this and I look forward to
receiving your contributions.
Magic magazines serve a variety of uses, and
one of the most important is to carry the history
and record of our magic world. I have been
reading some of our magazine back numbers and
was reminded of how many events the Ring
President was expected to attend! Have a look
yourselves, the Key Ring’s predecessor, The
Budget, is available to read on our website.

A s winter turns to
spring, thoughts turn
to summer shows and I
hope to be offered these
again this year. It all
seems a very long time
ago since battling the
elements at the various
garden parties and fun
days.
I particularly recall a
pensioners’ club evening in a
local village hall. Being a
concert party, our group had
several costume changes and
there was little or nowhere in
the main hall on which to hang
the ladies’ dresses. As it was a
warm May evening, they
decided to hang their outfits on
a small dress rail outside. All
was going well until a village
resident decided he needed a
bonfire. Well, you can imagine
the rest. Everything was
covered in smoke and, as the
side door was open, so were
some of the audience. Add to
this that some ants had decided
to take residence in my

suitcase, I suddenly
realised why our
ancestors had invented
theatres.
As we were packing
away, a local lady
reminded us that it was

time and that the best
show she had that night, along
with some of her friends, was in
watching the cast quick changing
through some gaps in the hedge
at the back of a wall behind the
Village Hall. That’s something we
had never thought of when setting
up for a show.
Smoke has always been a
bugbear and my mind goes back a
few years to a large Derbyshire
Steam Rally. I had been booked to
entertain the children with our
clown magic show. I was shown
to a small area where I was to set
up and, as I was screwing my
table top together, a large steam
roller pulled up and an angry
engine driver came rushing over
to me, demanding that I was in his
spot. I explained that the show
organiser had placed me there
and, after he had calmed down,
he decided to move the engine
round to behind me. All seemed
ok and the show started. A large
group of children eagerly told me
that the ends of my wands were
tipping off and that my
silver sceptre was
rising out of its case.
Just then, totally out of the blue,
the steam roller driver decided
he could out do me by blowing
his whistle and revving his
engine. This drowned my voice
and filled the air with thick
smoke, causing the children and
myself to start coughing. We
carried on for a few minutes,
but then I realised that the air
had got quite unpleasant. After
the show, I tried talking to him,
but he would have none of it
and just insisted I was in his
spot. I later found out that his
own children were in my
audience and, as is often said,
“There’s nowt so queer as folk.”
On a different note, we have
just completed a Derby Magic
Circle show, consisting of close
up and cabaret. The venue, a
listed building was a grammar
school which had a winding
staircase, featuring a stair lift.
First on was Jeani who, having
long legs, tucked them in as far
as they would go. What we
didn’t realise was that this listed
building narrowed towards the
top, which wedged Jeani in,
causing the chair lift to grind to
a halt. This prevented the
magicians and the audience
gaining access to the upstairs
room, where the show was
being held. Various thoughts
went through my head. “Would
it help to saw her in half?”
Luckily the steward appeared
and removed the hand rails and
it was the first time we have
ever started a show with
escapology!

eturning to the 100th

2016, at the age of 94.

popular exhibits, and one item
being considered is Tommy
Cooper’s sliding die-box.
There is always the problem style and it was

that their box is the one which

top pocket. To the latter’s surprise,
the ‘tip’ always turned out to be a
tea bag!’

refers to the claim that the

may have been based upon
known magician of his day in
America. To try out that theory, I
have tracked down an
illustration from the original
novel by L Frank Baum and set

THE MAGIC OF
Number magic has been around
since antiquity. One of the oldest
examples is said to be the

brainchild of a Greek
mathematician, Nichomachus of
Gerasa (c 60-120). His trick went
as follows: ask someone to think
of a number from 1-100; have
them divide it by 3 and tell you the
remainder; have them also divide
it by 5 and tell you the remainder;
finally, have them divide it by 7
by James Ward and tell you the remainder. Next,
multiply their first remainder by
70, their second remainder by 21
and their third remainder by 15.
Add the results together. Your total
will either be their number OR
their number plus 105. (If the
number you reach is higher than
100, simply deduct 105 to
determine their original number.)
A clever idea, though possibly
more popular with his Syrian
audience than it might be with
ours today!
One of the earliest works in the
English language to address the
magic of numbers was Reginald
Scot’s The Discoverie of Witchcraft
(1584). Although no tricks are
described, he refers to the ability
of magicians (or ‘jugglers’ as he
terms them in the language of the
time) to bamboozle their
audiences with ‘arythmeticall
devises’, ‘arythmeticall
conclusions’, and ‘divers feats
arythmeticall and geometricall.’
A century later, Jacques

thinking of 4, so will arrive at ‘D’.
They must now think of a
European country beginning with
‘D’ (it’s always Denmark). Next,
they must think of an animal (not
a bird or fish) that begins
with the second letter of
their country, ‘E’. Almost
always, they will think of
‘elephant’. Finally, ask
them to think of the
animal’s colour, and your
prediction comes to
pass.
This brings us to the
most potent principle in
magical numerology: the
power of the number 9.
(On which the above is
inherently based.)
There is so much that
can be done with this
number that I can only
touch on it here. Among
its properties is the fact
(as seen above) will produce a
number that can be reduced to 9.
For example: 784 x 9 = 7056. Add
these numbers, ie 7+0+5+6 =
Again, if any number in one half
of a multiplication can be reduced
to 9, the product can be reduced

numbers then reverse them and
subtract the smaller from the
larger, you will again be able to

This last approach allows us to
create a familiar ‘magic number’:
1089. By reversing any three-digit
number and subtracting the
smaller from the larger, eg 765-
567=198, and adding its reverse
sum (891), you will always reach
1089, which can be used in many
ways. One common ploy is to
force a page and word/line in a
book test, eg ‘page 108, line 9’.
Another basic number principle
(that can be endlessly adapted)
allows the forcing of a number
that is twice the value of the
current year. To achieve this, ask
your helper to think of a date on
which an important event in their
life occurred. Add it to the number
of years that have passed since
the event. Do this twice and you
end up with a number that is
twice the current year. For an

Many readers will know how to
force the numbers 15 and 165
using a set of cards numbered 1-
9. Space does not allow me to
elaborate here, but, suffice to say,
number forcing, in itself, is not
particularly ‘magical’. Create a
reason for forcing the above
numbers, however, and you have
John Archer’s ‘Chinese Choice’
and Eddie Burke’s ‘Shopping
Spree’, to name just two
entertaining routines. My
‘Collaborative Conjuring’ co-writer,
Chris Wardle, has published
several numerological works,
including his highly successful
Maths Tricks & Number Magic
(2013), which takes simple number
principles and cloaks them with
an entertaining story that cleverly
disguises the method.
David Berglas, in The Mind &
Magic of David Berglas, uses
mathematical principles to create
routines that are simple to
execute yet eminently magical in
performance. In ‘Add Infinitum’
(originally described in Pabular, vol
1, No 5, Jan 1975, and later on in
Abracadabra, vol 77, 26 May
1984), numbers chosen by an
audience (no forcing or secret
changes by the performer) are
totalled to match a prediction that
has been in full view throughout.
In ‘Today’s Date’, numbers called
out are totalled to produce that
day’s date. Though these are
maths-based effects, they do not
come across as such because of
the emotional involvement that is
woven into them. It is this that
transforms a maths puzzle into a
piece of magical theatre.
Magic Squares are another
form of numerological magic that,
done well, look nothing like a
maths trick. These are also
nothing new, being known to
Chinese mathematicians almost
2000 years ago, while Newe
Recreations by Nicholas Hunt,
published as long ago as 1631,
contains an early 9-digit example.
Magic aside, number tricks can
convey the impression that we are
maths geniuses. Tony Corinda’s
Thirteen Steps to Mentalism (D
Robbins & Co, 1968), describes
methods to extract square roots,
cube numbers and so on. For
those with an interest in chess, he
also explains – as does Paul
Daniels in Adult Magic (Barricade

Books Inc, 1997, Paul Daniels and
Barry Murray) – how to perform
the Knight’s Tour, where a Knight
moves to every square on the
board once, purely through the
use of numbers.
Theo Annemann’s 202 Ways of
Forcing (1933, Max Holden, New
York) contains many number
forces/principles, which are of
great use to the mathematical
magician.
The numbers 14 or 15 can be
forced with a pack of cards by
omitting two Aces and stacking
them in the following order: 7-8-
6-9-5-10-4-J-3-Q-2-K-A-K-2-Q-
3-J-4-10-5-9-6-8-7-7-8 etc. (One
of the earliest versions of this was
described by A.C.P. Medrington in
A Dozen of Magic for Practical
Conjurors, 1917, though he used
short cards to force ‘14’ every
time. Annemann himself has a
wrinkle that allows you to force
either 14 or 15 as preferred.) One
of the earliest tricks involving the
use of this force is Charles
Jordan’s ‘Fate and the Joker’. He
also employs his own variation to
produce the number 27 in
‘Psychic Prediction’. Both tricks
can be found in Charles Jordan’s
Best Card Tricks (Karl Fulves,
Dover Publications, 1992).
Another force touched on by
Annemann will be familiar to many
readers: the fact that the opposite
sides of a die will always total 7.
Though the result is not
guaranteed, mentalists will be
familiar with the 35/37 force –
where you ask your helper to think
of an odd number between 1 and
50 where the digits are different.
By removing a couple of numbers
as examples (11/15), you increase
your chances of 35/37 being

chosen.
Many of you will be familiar
with the 10-20 force. Here, you
place your force card at position
10 in the pack, ask for a number
between 10 and 20, count to it,
add the two digits of your chosen
number and count back. You will
always arrive at the card placed at
position 10. For anyone who
doubts its efficacy, Al Koran used
this to great effect on TV (as
described by Eddie Burke in
Adventures in Numerology, Mr “E”
Enterprises).
No article on numerology would
be complete without mention of
Leonardo Fibonacci. This 13th-
century Italian mathematician
gave his name to the Fibonacci
sequence, which can be employed
to great effect. I made use of it in
my published book test, Remote
Viewing Manual and Bob Longe’s
‘Ah, Yes, I Remember It Well’ (The
Magical Math Book) is well worth
a study. Norman Gilbreath’s
versatile Gilbreath Principle –
famously described by Max
Maven as ‘a thing of beauty’ – has
given birth to countless baffling
routines. Chris Wardle makes use
of it in his The Book of the
Lectures, and, for an in-depth look
at the Principle, see Arthur F.
MacTier’s Card Concepts (Lewis
Davenport Ltd, 2000). The Gray
Code (used by T.A. Waters in Mind,
Myth & Magick), and the Kruskal
Principle (or Kruskal Count) –
which allows you to ‘force’ a card
in a freely shuffled pack – are
extraordinarily clever uses of
mathematics. Mention should also
be made of George Sands’ Prime
Number Principle. The list goes
on!
I have, in this article, only been
able to skim the surface of
number magic, but I hope it will
encourage you to dig deeper into
what is, used imaginatively, an
extremely useful tool.

his effect relies on two aspects of
magic; the use of a letter pack (eg
or Piatnik ABC cards) and an
existing principle. I have combined the
two and brought about this routine.

Effect:
The performer announces that on the
table there are three books, each
containing over 300 pages. A three
figure number will be formed from 101 to 300
giving a choice of 200 numbers. The number will be
reached by three people each calling a single
number. Say for example page 123 is created. Now
a choice of three books is offered. In this example
the titles are The King’s Cannon, White Rivers and
From Script to Screen. One is freely selected. The
book is handed to a spectator who is asked to find
the first word on page 123 and write it down on a
supplied dry wipe board, ensuring the performer
does not see it. The book is then handed back.
Next the magician takes out a letter pack and
makes some comment about removing the
advertising cards and the wild card then passes the
remaining pack out to a different spectator for
examination and shuffling. The pack is returned and
the book selector is asked to concentrate on their
word. One by the magician takes out letters from
the pack and places them in a stand with their
backs facing the audience. When the word is
revealed, the stand is turned to face the audience
and the words match.

Making up and setting up:

There is quite a lot of work in making this up but
rest assured it is well worth the effort. First of all I
will deal with the books. They are in effect all the
same, in the example White Rivers. One copy is as
published, the other two have fake front and backs
on. You can buy three books for £5 from The Works,
so you just need to purchase three the same. A few
things to remember: 1) make sure the title you

Some sixty years or
so ago, due to the
demise of my great similar establishment in the next

My customary chat with a seed

cigarettes, something that
obviously wouldn’t occur in these
more health-conscious times. On
one particular visit I proffered him
a cigarette, which was accepted,
and following a few minutes chat
the rep asked, ‘Have you seen

where? My answer was to go to
the I.B.M. Conventions. They were
at a set time of the year and were
in different places, alternating
each year North and South and I
could meet up with fellow Magi.
I must have been about twenty-
five when I went to my first
convention, which I think I recall
was 1966 in Hastings. The first
thing I did after Registration, as I

The early seventies were a total
whirlwind for me. I graduated and
started work, I was presenting
both music and paranormal
programmes on radio, appearing
on TV, performing kids’ shows
galore and cabaret in hotels and
clubs every night, becoming
president of a the largest youth
organization in Malta, of the
Parapsychology Society and of the
Malta Magic Club, releasing two
singles and two LPs of my own
songs, participating in song
festivals, organising a national folk
song festival, drawing political
cartoons for a national Sunday
paper, undergoing a tortuous and
botched-up tonsillectomy and
ultimately getting married in
1976. To be honest, I don’t know
how I managed.

After taking part in a stage
show at the University Theatre
with my sister helping me, it was
decided to take the show up to
the Astra Theatre in Gozo (a
smaller Maltese island). My sister
could not make it and I enlisted
the help of Mary Anne who was
singing and dancing in the same

year together until we decided
that we would become an item.
During these years, magic was

anything from electric bulbs and
razor blades to naked flame’. At
the Buskett Roadhouse, earlier
that year, there was Mark Ede and
Michelle both sporting flamboyant
outfits and hairstyles while
performing the scimitar

Metamorphosis. At that time, too,
we had performances by Roy
Maxwell and Constance Vayne,
known as “The Scorpios” whose
autobiography, “From Poorhouse
to Penthouse and Back” provides
fascinating reading. Their finale
was a bullet catching routine. I
understand that the only person
who had accomplished that stunt
in Malta before was Maurice Fogel
while performing for the British
Services.
At the Roadside Inn and then

fascinating show by an artiste
billing himself as Mandrake (one
of several). This was actually Jerry
Sullivan from Manchester who
seemed to have some history with
Peter Diamond. He had started his

young lady whom he introduced
as his daughter. To be honest, I
was quite impressed with his
show especially at the fact that,
although the venue was quite
intimate, he managed to perform
the Aerial Suspension, the

Disembodied Princess and the
Metamorphosis. Perhaps it was
this that made me fall in love with
grand illusions performed in
cabaret. The Metamorphosis was
the first one with which I became
obsessed. I soon had one
manufactured. I used this for a
year or so but it was bigger than
necessary and eventually I
changed it twice and ended for
decades with one inspired
by Alan Shaxon’s
model in “My Kind of
Magic”.

Before he retired, Les had worked
for the Post Office but during the
war he entertained with ENSA in
the UK and India. Unfortunately,
he passed away on the night he
was made Honorary Life Vice
President of the Northern Magic
Circle in Harrogate in 1978. A
well-known escapologist also
joined us. He was thirty-four-
year old Timothy Dill-Russell but
I cannot remember much about
him. What I recall is that, to
impress him and the other
guests, during the magic
meeting, I performed a trick
where I actually burned a ten-
shilling note, which would have
gone a long way at that time. Dill-
Russell was performing at The
Ceasar’s nightclub. It was a
sophisticated venue and very
popular with visitors and locals
alike.

I had the opportunity
to start working at
The Ceasar’s and this
extended through the
Christmas season. The
souvenir menu described me for
the first time as ‘Malta’s Man of
Magic’ an alliterative title which I
kept using to this day.

After the cancellation in 2020,
then a Virtual Dinner in 2021, it
was wonderful to finally be able
to attend the ‘real thing’ and it
was well worth the wait! Alan
and Moira had pulled out all of
the stops, together with help
from family and friends, to make
this a truly magical evening.
Around 80 guests, including
many notable names and
current and past presidents of
various societies, were
welcomed in the bar area, of the
Bar Hill Hotel, Cambridge, before
entering the dining room to find
surprises on their beautiful,
magic-themed tables. These
consisted of a delicious treat of
Scottish tablet sweets, hand
made by Mandy Fletcher and
‘Alan Maskell’s Presidential
Prediction,’ a trick devised by
Chris Wardle especially for the
occasion. Each table had been
named after a magician who had
a connection to the I.B.M. British
Ring, Cambridge and The Pentacle
Club and Alan had produced a
booklet for each table explaining
that special bond. (The named

As you can tell, a great deal of
thought and preparation had gone
into this event. Before the dining
commenced, our compère for the
night, Paul Martin, led a game of
Heads and Tails, which set the
mood for this fun-filled night.
Alan’s sister, the Reverend
Rosemary Maskell, said Grace and
then it was on to the dining! The
meal itself was delicious, the
portions generous and the service
prompt and courteous, you
couldn’t ask for anything more.
Casual close-up magic was seen
at the tables and in the bar
beforehand from performers
including Michael Carr, Rick
Tynan, Ali Cardabra, Aidan
Heritage and Doug Gregg.
President Alan then led the
loyal toast and welcomed us
formally to the evening, with a
humorous and touching speech.
John Davenport then gave a
witty response on behalf of the
guests. The raffle followed and
together with the Heads and Tails
game earlier and a ‘ribbon
bottle,’ made a combined total of
over £600 for the Ring and the
charity, Parkinson’s UK.
Then it was on to the cabaret
of award-winning acts. Compère
Paul Martin has a relaxed and
engaging style, which
immediately puts you at ease. He
first introduced Roy Davenport,
who presented the egg bag, with
a Horace Goldin patter story, then
the very seldom seen spirit clock
and bell, assisted by Moira
Fletcher and finally Roy’s
signature, fast paced and
captivating presentation of the
linking rings. It was an absolute
joy to behold. Paul Martin returned
to present a medley of mentalism
involving colours, envelopes, a
tossed-out deck-style variation,
using a lottery numbers book, a
neat twist on confabulation and a
skilful presentation of centrifugal
force using a wooden hoop and a
glass of vodka. Magical, humorous
and baffling. Special mention here
must be given to a young man
called Stephen, one of Alan’s
nephews, who assisted Paul and
other acts during the night, being
seated at the front of the room
and being a willing and very
patient victim/volunteer! Paul then
introduced Mandy Fletcher, ably

third-generation magician. Mandy
exudes a warm and cheeky
confidence and she not only

aforementioned Stephen, but she
even turned water into wine,
repeatedly, to toast the audience
at the end! It was engaging, funny

‘JezO,’ aka Jeremy Bond, part of
yet another magical dynasty
alongside the Maskells and the
Fletchers, who just gets funnier
and flashier every time you see
him. Winner of the Family
Entertainer of the Year Award at
Blackpool, only JezO can get away
with combining things like the
stool impaler gag whilst
performing the Lyle hat or doing
the zig-zag arm whilst on a
hoverboard, but he does!
However, his stroke of genius was
inviting past British Ring President
Richard Cadell up on stage to
assist him in a giant-bladed
guillotine (devised by JezO’s Dad,
illusionist Doctor Bondini). Richard
was a wonderful sport and
between them the laughs came
thick and fast with JezO’s blend of
situation comedy and out-and-out
innuendo. Richard’s composed
reactions, mixed with a palpable
sense of fear came as the blade
went not only down but back up
through his neck too! JezO’s finale
involved an industrial explosion of
spring snakes; you had to be
there! Hilarious, unpredictable,
and unique! If you had
experienced any one of those
acts, you would have felt you had
watched a fine cabaret, so to get
them all really was a treat.

up with old friends, meeting new
ones and experiencing the fun,
