Requirements: (1) A stack of business

smarking pen
‘Method and Presentation: Place the
‘Sharpie pen on the table near the spect

invite @ spectator to select one, saying:
"Tf you were to reach in and take
card." Have card rermoved, shown t0

‘Explain that you are going to staple these wo outjogged busi
ness cards together Pick up the stapler with your right hand and

‘ed so that the oujogged cards are ow injonged. Spread the top
few cards and ask the spectator € touch one. Outjog the touched
ard and lose the spread. You ae noe going to secretly sich the
Tose, outjogged card for the card already stapled between the 0
Snwich cards. This is done by momentary raising both hands
‘asyou ask the spectator to pickup the marking pen.
‘As you lower your hands, push the outjogged sletion lush
with your night forefinger a8 your right thumb at the back end
pushes the outjogged carde outward and flush (Fig. 3 2 sop:
ction view), This automatically outogs the card already stapled

Extend the packet
toward the spectator and
point to the Blank section

Push the seleton flush as
you raise both hands again
nd alt back the packet.‘This action auromaically pushes the wo “sandwich” cards to
an injogged postion again. Say, "It goes in the middle of the
test ofthese cards. I know its approximate position, but nobody
Inows exactly where itis.” f you keep your left hand tilted
back slighty, the injogged cards cannot be seen
Keep talking and looking at the spectaor a5 you grasp the
frontend ofthe packet with your palm-down right hand. Again
turn the packet end-overend and into. your left hand,
Tnmmediately lip the packet sideways and ito a lefchand deal
ing postion. Tle the packet backwards and lift all the cards
‘cept the bottom tues in a righthand Biddle Grip (Fie. 4).
‘Table the right-hand packet with the blank-side uppermost in
front ofthe spectatoc Keep your left hand rurned sigh inward
to conceal the injogaed, siged selection from views then turn it
palm down and rest your Knuckles against the table op (Fig. S)
‘Explain that you want the spectator to rifle che front end of
the packet of business cards. (If you are confident that the
spectator knows how to “dribble” cards, use this approach;
hhoweves, if he is not a brother magician, this approach i not
advisable) The next action requites precise ting. Say, "Rifle
the cards and Tm git each with tee oy ped
"AS soon as the spectator begins to riflerelease cards, rasp
the exposed end of the “sandwich” cards with you palm-down
fight hand — thumb on top, fingers underneath, Immediately
flaten and extend your let fingers, then swing the righthand
elongated cards in clockwise outward arc to the tight (Fg. 6,
4 stop action view). The selection must stop and end up imide
the accommodating space afforded by the specators cifing
action. In other words it ends up perfectly aligned with the rest
(ofthe packets cards.
This “stabbing” action must be very swift, Properly execut
ed, the audience cannot se thatthe selection is already beoween
the “sandwich” cards. Say, "Notice thatthe two cards went it
‘about midioay®” Pick up and clearly show that the “sandwich
‘atds protrude from the cee ofthe packet, Savor the moment
and slowly withdraw the “sandwich” cards from the packet and
dd, “Look! A card is trapped between these two cards.” Let
this inital effect register.
“Turn the elongated packer ove to show the signed surface of
the tapped card. Ask, "Is that your signed card?” When the
Spectator afims, extend the elongated cards so that he can
rasp the protruding end of his signed card. Say, “Fee! that
‘Does it fel like your card is securely sandwiched between the
‘neo stapled cards?” Permit him to check, then quickly add,
“Does i fel lite may be stapled? Regacdles of what he s4ys,
says "Know what the compincer i?”
"Asthe spectator considers your question, let goof the “sand:
wich” cards so that he hod all the cards (Fig, 7). Say “Letting
{g0!" Now let him closely examine everything to discover that
his signed cardis actualy stapled berween the two other cards
Roots: This is 2 version of “The Stapled Card” published in
Scarne On Card Tricks (1950). The book was ghose-writen by
De Ben Braude, who collated most of the material. Inthe intro
‘duction to this effect is writen, “Created bythe author based on
4 suggestion fom Joseph Prieto, the very clever New Jersey
magician.” This suggests that Prcto devised the plot and the
published handling was created by Scare. In any case, there ate
‘ow several versions in prine by Sankey, Mario, Binal and
others
