Orientation–Workshop Design

Objectives:

At the end of the one-day activity, student-participants are expected to:

1. describe who is a Child and his/her basic rights and responsibilities;


2. be informed of the relevant child protection domestic laws protecting the rights of children
(RA 7610, JJWA and RA 10627 Anti-Bullying Act);
3. have an awareness of the different issues and concerns Filipino children are facing today at
home, school and their communities;
4. know more about CHR, its roles, functions, services and programs; and
5. express interest to be part of CHR programs and activities for children.

Target Participants: 50 – 70 students per session

PRELIMINARY ACTIVITY: Expectation Setting and Presentation of the Program


OBJECTIVE:

To surface and clarify the expectations of the participants and make the necessary adjustments in
the prepared program, if needed.

DURATION: Fifteen (15) minutes

METHODOLOGY/PROCESS:

1. Each participant will be asked to answer the guide questions and write their answers on
the meta cards that will be provided to them.
Guide Questions:
1. What do you expect to gain/learn from the whole-day activity? (Blue meta
cards)
2. What/How can you contribute to ensure the success of the orientation-
workshop? (Yellow meta cards)
2. Children will then be instructed to post their answers on the board/wall.
3. CHR Facilitator will summarize the answers and thereafter present the prepared
program.

SESSION 1: Who is a Child?


OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lecture, participants will be able to form a holistic picture of a child and understand
why a child is a holder of rights.

TIME DURATION: One (1) hour

METHODOLOGY/PROCESS

1. Workshop (30 minutes)

The participants will be divided into 5-8 smaller groups. Once they are grouped, each of
the participants will have to draw his/her own concept of a Child. Participants will be
given ten (10) minutes to do their individual work and fifteen (15) minutes to share their
output to their group. Thereafter, each group will make a collage by combining all their
individual art works and post it in a designated area.

2. Plenary Session (20 minutes lecture)

The CHR resource persons will present an overview of the characteristics of a child, its
legal bases and the factors affecting them. To ensure orderly discussion and facilitate
participants’ learning, it is recommended that the power point (Who is a child?) be
utilized as teaching aid during the plenary discussion.

3. A 10 minute open forum will follow the presentation.

SESSION 2: The Rights of a Child


OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lecture, participants is informed of the basic concepts of the United Nations
Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), its background and core principles. Students will also be
able to articulate the different rights of the child and how they are categorized.

DURATION: One (1) hour

METHODOLOGY/PROCESS

1. Input (20 minutes)

Using the power point presentation Rights of a Child, the CHR resource person will
briefly discuss the basic concept of CRC, its six core principles and the categories of the
rights of a child.

2. Open Forum (10 minutes)

3. Group work – Story telling (30 minutes)

Each group will be given a picture of which they have to come up with a short story. In
creating their story the following questions must be considered:

a) What are the rights of a child that is/are shown is this picture?
b) Has the right been violated or granted? If a right has been violated, what could be
done to grant the child her or his right? If a right has been granted, how would the
child’s life been different if it had not?

SESSION 3: Bata-bata kumusta ka na?


OBJECTIVES

At the end of the session, participants are expected to become aware of the various child rights
issues currently besetting the Filipino homes, schools and communities.

DURATION: One (1) hour

METHODOLOGY/PROCESS

1. Workshop (Surfacing of issues) – 30 minutes

First, each group will have to choose a facilitator, documenter and a rapporteur.

Second, through the help of the facilitator, members of the group will have to identify
pertinent issues and concerns that are being encountered by Filipino children in their
homes, schools and communities guided by the following questions:

a) What are the issues and concerns of children in your family, school and community?
b) What are the causes and effects of such concerns/issues to you, your family, and
your community?
c) What should the government do to solve/address these issues/concerns?

Fifteen minutes will be allotted for the small group sharing.

After the discussion, the responses of the group should be presented in the plenary by the
rapporteur using the following format:

Each group will be given a maximum of 3 minutes to present their output.

2. Input (20 minutes)

The resource person will discuss the current situation of Filipino children using the reports
and studies conducted by partner agencies and organizations, i.e., UNICEF, Council of the
Welfare of Children and JJWC. Current programs and services being offered by the
government will also be presented.

To illustrate the situation of the children, power point presentation “Bata, bata kumusta ka
na? will be utilized.

3. Open Forum (10 minutes)

SESSION 4: Child Protection Laws in the Philippines


OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the lecture, participants understood and be able to discuss the salient provisions of RA
7610, RA 9344, as amended by RA 10630 and RA 10627.

DURATION: Forty five (45) minutes

METHODOLOGY/PROCESS

1. Input (20 minutes)


Resource person will discuss the salient features RAs 7610, 9344, as amended,
and 10627 using child-friendly terminologies and in a manner easily understood
by the student-participants.

3. Activity: Students’ Pledge Against Bullying

Student-participants will be encouraged to take a stand against bullying by taking


the anti-bullying pledge found at the back cover of the anti-bullying notebook.

ACTIVITY 6: #NasaanangCHR?
OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the session, attendees will have a better understanding on the nature of the work of
the CHR, the bases of its existence, its structure, mandates, and the services/programs currently
being carried out by the Commission.

DURATION: One (1) hour

METHODOLOGY/PROCESS

1. Role Playing (30 minutes)

Each group will have to enact a scenario that will show their perception of the role of CHR in
the following situations:

a) In school, when a child is bullied or abused


b) When a crime is committed in the community
c) When a child is arrested for committing a crime
d) During situation of armed conflict
e) When a person’s right has been violated
f) Other situation/s as may be identified by the facilitator

The CHR facilitator will have to give his/her observation and/or comments after each
presentation. If there is any misconception on the role of the Commission, the same must be
clarified and corrected.

2. Input (10 minutes)

To expound on the nature of the work of the Commission, a resource person from CHR will
provide a short presentation on the mandate, structure, program and services of CHR.
