SUBJECT: Landing Gear - Goodrich Wheel Assemblies, Brake Assemblies, and Related
Components

CLARIFICATION OF THE CONVERSION COATING (SURFACE TREATMENT)

SPECIFICATIONS: MIL-C-5541, MIL-C-5541 Class 1A, and MIL-DTL-5541

1. Effectivity

Goodrich wheel assemblies, brake assemblies, and related components that are installed
on Bombardier aircraft.

2. Reference

Applicable Goodrich Component Maintenance Manuals (CMM’s) and other Goodrich

maintenance documents.

3. Purpose

Performance characteristics and verification procedures (for example: salt-spray on test

specimens) are in specifications MIL-C-5541, MIL-C-5541 Class 1A, or MIL-DTL-5541.
The Goodrich manufacturing facility and the companies that make conversion coating
materials must evaluate the coating by the performance characteristics and verification
procedures.

This Service Letter tells operators that the performance characteristics and verification
procedures are not necessary for repair procedures.

This Service Letter also tells operators that the actual conversion coating material (a
“consumable”) is given by QPL-81706, which is controlled by MIL-DTL-81706.

4. Reason

The specifications: MIL-C-5541, MIL-C-5541 Class 1A, and MIL-DTL-5541, contain

performance characteristics and verification procedures that are not necessary for
maintenance of parts.

5. Procedure

Apply the specified conversion coating material in QPL-81706 for Goodrich repair
procedures that reference specifications MIL-C-5541, MIL-C-5541 Class 1A, or
MIL-DTL-5541. Obey applicable Goodrich maintenance documents and instructions from
the maker of the conversion coating for procedures to apply and examine the coating.
