3. Purpose
This Service letter gives operators Goodrich-recommended shelf-life limits and storage
recommendations for elastomeric seals and seal assemblies.
NOTE: Rubber preformed packings, O-rings, grommets, grease seals, and grease retainers
are types of elastomeric seals.
4. Reason
Customers request shelf-life limits and storage recommendations. Some CMMs give an
incorrect shelf-life of 15 years for preformed packings (O-rings) that are used as grease seals.
5. Procedure
Put elastomeric seals and seal assemblies into storage in a dark and dry area that is usually
not more than 100° F (38° C). Keep these parts in their initial packaging. Also keep these
parts away from: flow of air, radiation, ozone (made by electric arcs, fluorescent lamps, and
other electrical equipment), and other contamination.
Refer to the table below for recommended shelf-life limits of elastomeric seals and seal
assemblies that are not installed:

SHELF LIFE PARTS FOR BRAKE ASSEMBLIES PARTS FOR WHEEL ASSEMBLIES
No Limit Preformed packings (O-rings) used as Preformed Packings (O-rings) and
grease seals or as hydraulic seals in brakes Grommets used as Pneumatic Seals
that use phosphate-ester hydraulic fluid
15 Years Grease seals or preformed packings Grease Seals, Seal Assemblies, and
(O-rings) used as hydraulic seals in brakes Grease Retainers
that use MIL-PRF-5606 or
MIL-PRF-83282 hydraulic fluid*

* Hydraulic seals that have part numbers which start with M83248/1 or M83485/1, and are
used with MIL-PRF-5606 or MIL-PRF-83282 hydraulic fluid, have no limit on shelf life.
