Course Title: Principles of Accounting 1

Course Description:
The course is not just theory but also takes real life examples and walks you through the accounting process. It is meant for students who would like to grasp the accounting
concepts in an easy and fun learning environment.
A study of accounting concepts and their application in transaction analysis and financial statement preparation and analysis. Emphasis on the accounting cycle for service and
merchandising enterprises.

Course Learning Outcomes/Objectives:

1. Study Guide: Each unit contains a Study Guide that provides students with the learning outcomes, unit lesson, required reading assignments, and supplemental resources.
2. Learning Outcomes: Each unit contains Learning Outcomes that specify the measurable skills and knowledge students should gain upon completion of the unit.
3. Unit Lesson: Each unit contains a Unit Lesson, which discusses lesson material.
4. Reading Assignments: Each unit contains Reading Assignments from one or more chapters from the textbook and publisher videos.
5. Suggested Reading: Suggested Readings are listed in Unit I and IV. Students are encouraged to read there sources listed if the opportunity arises, but they will not be tested on their
knowledge of the Suggested Readings.
6. Learning Activities (Non-Graded): These non-graded Learning Activities are provided to aid students in their course of study.

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

1. Examine the accounting cycle.

3. Generate inventory systems and costing methods.
4. Appraise the classes and transactions of liabilities.
5. Formulate financial statements according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
6. Analyze financial statements to inform decision makers.

8. Compare International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).

COURSE Requirements

Presentation (5 %)     Each student will summarize their findings in a short 10-15 minute presentation during the final week of class. The presentations will be graded on:

 Content–extent to which the presentation is related to an important point of course content


 Clarity-    organization of your arguments and presentations, analysis of your key points, and persuasiveness of your position

Homework (10 %) - There will be homework assignments, current events articles during the semester.

Tests (60%)  Three exams will be administered. The exams will cover the material included in the textbook chapters, handouts and lectures.  Missed Tests: Make up tests will not
be given except in extreme cases with supportive documentation.  You must notify the professor prior to the day of the test or the next class.

Participation (10%).  All students are expected to participate actively in class discussion.  This includes evidence of thorough prior preparation of course materials, engaging in
exercises, etc.  Attendance at all sessions is required except in previously arranged cases/emergencies.
