Write a one-page composition (several paragraphs) describing the world today.

Living a New Normal Life

Life was indeed full of surprises; we never know what tomorrow brings. Who would have thought that our daily
life instantly change in just a blink? The life we used to be is a life we can no longer enjoy like before because
of COVID-19 virus that had greatly affected our physical wellbeing, mental and emotional health, and even the
economy all over the world.

To keep everyone safe, the Department of Health (DOH) and World Health Organization (WHO) advised to
wear face mask when going outside the house, should wash hands daily, keep an alcohol or sanitizer all the
time and should keep physical distancing. The infected individual should undergo 14 days quarantine in a
designated area whether in the hospital or in an area provided by the local government. In order to avoid being
infected, we are obliged to follow all the health protocols and alter our routine and diet into healthier and safer
one to ensure that we can defend ourselves against the virus by strengthening our immunity.

The sad thing is that, many business establishments are closed including malls and shops. Most of the workers
lost their job making life tougher for them. Places around the country are temporarily locked down to prevent
the spreading of the virus prohibiting us to travel. Schools are no longer face to face interaction but now called
as “distance learning” where in class session and discussion are dependent on technology and internet as it
became an online class while for those places with poor internet connection became a modular learning. Many
students struggled to adjust in this new set up that had affected their mental and emotional health. We can see
on the news how the suicide incident and domestic violence had increased during the pandemic and it was
very alarming to know.

Although lives during these days are hard to endure, Filipino people remained optimistic and hopeful by
keeping their faith, positive thoughts, and counting the bad days as blessing in disguise. The national and local
government extended help in any way as much as they can to ensure that people are getting aids and help
them cope up in the present situation dubbed as “new normal”. Some individual envisioned the pandemic as
an opportunity for business and that is why online selling becomes a trend.

Through time, we were able to fit in to the new normal of living and eventually become accustomed to the
situation we are facing everyday like wearing face masks, washing of hands and keeping alcohols or
sanitizers. We discover new ways how to deal with different things with health protocols in mind. This
pandemic taught us many things and made us realized how important our health is as well as our family,
friends, relationships and communication.

Eventually, few months ago vaccine had already been a success after months of research, tests and trials
reviving our hope and the retrieval of the life we used to have. However, the experiences we had experienced
during the pandemic will surely etch on our heart and memory and will imprint on the future’s history.

Assessment

1. What is rubric?

 Is a general scoring guide that describes the level at which a student performs a process or a
product. It is an authentic assessment tool that is particularly useful in assessing criteria that
are complex and subjective (Jazmin-Hena, 2015).
 Is an assessment tool that specifies the performance expectations for any kind of student work,
particularly those that are not traditional in nature like portfolio, outputs or projects,
performances, collaborative work, and research (David et al., 2019)
 A coherent set of criteria for student’s work that includes description of levels of performance
quality and criteria ( Navarro et al., 2019)
 Is a type of scoring guide that assesses and articulates specific components and expectations
for an assignment.

2. Why are rubrics important?

 Rubrics are important because it mainly assesses the performance which is its main purpose.
Take note that not all performances can be assessed with rubrics there is also a limitation in
using it. The best thing about the rubrics is that they are descriptive and not evaluative and its
main goal is to match the performance to the description rather than judge it.
ED 209 Unit III – Lesson 6
Assessment

1. Why do we need to quantify assessment results?

 We need to quantify assessment results because if it is only in a qualitative form, it is hard for
us to determine the exact rating we should give to the students the moment we tell them our
feedback. When a result undergo quantifying process, that means we convert it using any
standardized quantity scale converter where in our qualitative assessment has a quantitative
equivalent. It is easier for us to summarize the result and solve the grade since everything is
already in numbers.

2. Why do we need to couple quantitative assessment results with qualitative?

 We need to couple quantitative assessment results with qualitative because the two work as a
team in order to produce the required and needed outcome to measure our students learning
and improvement in the class. Quantitative assessment used scale and rubrics to measure while
qualitative assessment used criteria and narrative feedback. Combining the two will create the
desired result we wanted to let us know if our students are learning, improving and if we are an
effective teacher.
ED 209 Unit III – Lesson 7
Activity

Give feedback on the use of Modular Instruction in teaching. Discuss your feedback in not more than five
paragraphs.

How I perceive Modular Instruction

Due to COVID-19 pandemic, we are forced to stop face to face classes to ensure our safety and changed it
into online classes which in our case at West Visayas State University Pototan campus, the school implemented
modular instruction.

Although it is new to students like us, I find it good and effective. Modular instruction had given me the
opportunity to study on my own accord making me more independent and responsible. I do not need to travel
or be away from home when studying and it had given me more time to be with my family while continuing
my learning through provided modules. Throughout the semester, I was able to save money because I
traveled less and everything is provided at home. I only get to spend my allowance when buying load for
internet and payments for printing out soft copies.

However, the downfall of having a modular instruction is that we cannot interact actively with our classmates,
fellow students and professors personally making the development of our social skills put into halt. We can no
longer practice collaboration, cooperation and team work. Another, it is hard for us to absorb the lesson
effectively because some of the subjects have limited input and the discussion to clearly explain the concepts
are lacking. We do not receive daily feedbacks anymore because of the distance learning making us wonder if
our outputs are correct or not.

Even though the modular instruction is extra challenging for us, I can say that it was still a productive method
to keep us learning and to continue our studies amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Analysis

Based on the activity, construct a matrix showing the advantages (good points) and the disadvantages
(negative points) of Modular Instruction.

Advantages of Modular Instruction Disadvantages of Modular Instruction

1. Making students independent and responsible 1. No more active interaction
2. Less financial expenses 2. Declining social development
3. Seldom travelling 3. Collaboration, cooperation and team work are no
longer practiced
4. More time with family 4. No actual discussion
5. keeping us safe against the virus 5. Seldom feedbacks
Application

In a grade 7 class, recitation was conducted. One student was asked to give the different parts of
speech. The student just stood up and could not give any answer. He remained quiet for more than three
minutes. As a teacher, what feedback will you provide?

 As a teacher the feedback I am going to provide is that, I will provide some hints or show him
/her actions that describes some parts of speech. If he/she still cannot recall, I will tell him/ her
to sit in a well-mannered and positive way like “It’s alright dear, but you should try and
remember next time okay? Please sit down.” and then I will ask other students until they will be
able to provide the answers and class will continue.

Assessment

1. Why do we need feedback?

 We need a feedback because feedback is a powerful means of helping the learners improve
their academic performance. Through feedback we can reach out the students and we are able
to help them distinguish which skill they are lacking to enhanced and improve their performance
in class. Feedback serve as the students’ guide to keep in track whether they are improving or
not and learning or not. As a teacher, it is important to provide reliable, concrete and specific
feedback to ensure students’ improvement.

2. Why should feedback be specific?

 Feedback should be specific in order to avoid confusion to students and parents. When the
given feedbacks are specific, we can make sure that the students or parents clearly understood
what we mean and they can point out which aspects they need to improve or maintain if it is a
positive feedback. We are leading into right path and we can assure that they will improve
eventually because we do our job accurately.
